Where to sleep in San Vicente de la Barquera

Our first selection is the Hotel Miramar, with 3 stars, in the center of town. The rooms and service are satisfactory. What’s special about this hotel is listening to the boats as they go out to fish in the morning and seeing the sunrise over the estuary.

2 km from the beach and in the center of the historical district is the Hotel Faro de San Vicente. It’s one of the most demanded hotels because of its location. The best part is the outdoor terrace that’s set up as a bar, which is perfect for relaxing after an active day.

An interesting alternative is the Hospedaje El Somante, which is a bit farther from the historical district but offers views of the ocean as well as the mountains. It’s located in an area suited for cycling, hiking, riding horses and windsurfing.

For those who plan an escape to this town for its active tourism, especially surfing, Surfing San Vicente is the best place to stay in San Vicente de la Barquera. It’s in the eastern part of the ocean in San Vicente de la Barquera, next to one of the best surf schools in Spain. It’s a bit father out, but still only a 10 minute walk from the center town, since it’s not a very large area.

The area of Liébana is ideal for hiking and cycling, which is why we suggest the Hotel Valdecoro, which is located ideally for practicing both sports. At the same time, the hotel is found just a 4-minute walk from the center of town. The rooms are large and recently renovated.

The Hotel & Spa Arha is also located very close to the center of Potes, as well as the Picos de Europa Natural Park. The rooms are satisfactory, and you can have a drink at the bar after a spa session and massage.

To decide where to eat in Santander, there is a wide offering of accommodations, and we'll help you with the following list of places that we find to be the most appropriate.

Where to sleep in Santander

The Gran Hotel Sardinero is our first choice for a perfect stay in Santander, with classic cream-colored decor integrated with the complex but elegant architecture. The surrounding gardens are perfect for taking a walk if you don’t feel like going to the beach.

The Hotel Bahía is found in the commercial area of Santander and, since it’s mostly focused on accommodating business travelers, is perfectly equipped for holding conferences. We also suggest the 5-star Eurostars Hotel Real, with spectacular views of Santander bay and Sardinero beach without even getting out of bed. The menu at the restaurant has a selection of over 180 wines. There is also a sauna, Turkish bath, and a thermal circuit in a salt water pool.

Silken Coliseum is build in an old movie theater with a monumental façade. It’s located at a point between the cathedral and train station in Santander. The Hotel Art Santander is another alternative for staying in Santander with a privileged location, views of the ocean, free parking, and just 500 meters from the center of the city.

The most economical option for sleeping in Santander is the Hotel Chiqui, located at the end of Sardinero beach. The breakfast here is luxurious, and if you can, ask for one of the rooms with a terrace, which are much more spacious and bright.

For pilgrims, the Albergue Para Peregrinos Del Camino De Santiago is a good option because it is located in the heart of Santander. However, pilgrims have very different opinions about it.

Despite what its name suggests, this town is located inland and without direct access to the beach. There isn’t any coast, but you can enjoy many interesting activities like the Cuevas de Altamira, and you’re next to the cities of Santander and Comillas, or you could even visit Oyambre Natural Park. And, after all, if you really need a beach, you only have to go 7 km to the north. For deciding where to stay in Santillana del Mar, here we detail our list of favorite places.

Where to sleep in Santillana del Mar

The Parador Santillana del Mar is located in the nucleus of the town’s historical district and very close to tourist attractions like the Santillana zoo and the Museo de Altamira. It is a very luminous stone and wood building, and the suspended lamps in the dining room are the hotel’s defining characteristic. It’s an architectural ensemble that has no particular charm but is perfect for relaxation.

Another place that we recommend for spending the night in this town is the Parador de Santillana Gil Blas, which is found in the main plaza of Santillana del Mar. It has a rustic style as well as more modern elements. For dinner, order their specialty, rabas rebozadas (fried calamari rings).

The 5-star Hotel Casa de Marqués occupies an old building from the 15th century, ideal for sleeping in Santillana del Mar. It’s located in one of the busiest areas of the town, but also has very good interior sound insulation. The rooms are spacious despite the building’s antiquity.

Where to sleep in Santoña

For staying near the beach, the Hotel Juan de la Cosa is a very good option, since it is just 2 km away from the beach where you can play outdoor sports both in the water, like surfing, or in the town itself, like running. The hotel has nice decorations, though nothing very special. What we like about spending the night here is the special attention paid to the food; it’s not written in the menu, but if you ask they can prepare special dietary menus or even take-away lunches if you plan to spend the whole day outdoors.

The Hospedaje La Tortuga is more economical option that’s found in the heart of Santoña. It’s a place to relax that we like for the decoration of the rooms and the variety of the breakfast that they serve. It also gets extra points for offering the flexibility of possible a late check-out.

Still in Santoña but more north of the historical district, the Posada Las Garzas is another place to stay that we recommend, since it’s in front of Berria beach and is in a great location for visiting the Marismas de Santoña, Victoria, y Joyel Natural Park. Where to sleep in Laredo

Our favorite hotel in Laredo is the Hotel Cosmopol, which we like because of its location in front of Salvé Beach and the unforgettable views from its terraces. The beds and furnishings are satisfactory, and if you have any problems they are always available to help you. El Ancia is another hotel with 3 stars in the area, just 150 meters from the same beach. You can have a copa at the hotel bar next to their large wood-burning fireplace. If you have a pet, ask for one of the rooms with a large terrace, and they can provide it to you without problem.

The Hotel Miramar is our final suggestion for sleeping in Laredo, and it is very nice for the freshness of its decor and its mirrors, which give a great feeling of spaciousness within the room. It’s close to the beach, but you will need a car because getting there requires climbing a few kilometers. Being at such a height means the views are wonderful.

The less central alternative is found in Colindres, a town 4km away from Laredo. The Posada Casa de Valle is an old palatial house that’s special because of the uniqueness of each one of its spaces. All the rooms have a pastel tone but each one is different, so that it almost seems like they belong to separate hotels. It's worth it to spend the night here just for the gardens that surround the house, and they also have a barbecue for guests to use.

It’s a place brimming with culture and artistic points of interest like Capricho de Gaudí, and if you visit the area you are also less than 20 minutes from San Vicente de Barquera by car. To choose the best place to stay in Comillas, we give a list of our favorite options.

Where to sleep in Comillas

Our first choice is the Abba Comillas Golf Hotel because it has basically everything: perfect location (10 minutes from the beach), places to relax (sauna, whirlpool, Turkish bath, pediluvium), and you can practice golf on a course with 9 holes. The rooms are very well lit and all of them have views from the ocean to the Picos de Europa.

We also like Hotel Comillas, with 4 stars, for staying in Comillas because it’s next to the Palacio Sobrellano and the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas, two essential stops during a visit to Comillas. The hotel’s old-fashioned but renovated style is very elegant, and the food at its restaurant is certainly worth trying.

The Apartamentos Mar Comillas are great for someone looking for a beach vacation, since they are almost on the water. They are also in a good location for other local destinations, close to places of interest, and offer beautiful views of the city.

Sleep in Comillas: Surroundings

An escape to Comillas can be merely cultural or something more relaxed. If the latter is the option you’re looking for, Palación de Toñanes (in Toñanes) can give you all of the relaxation you’re craving. Toñanes is 17 km away from Comillas, but the rural atmosphere provided by this “Palación” will not be found in other parts of the area. The most striking aspects of this hotel are its location, views, and above all the deer and hens that are kept in an area overlooking the garden.

And all there is to say about the food is that this is a coastal town, so you can already imagine the freshness of the seasonal fish and seafood. To help you choose a suitable place to sleep in Castro Urdiales, we give you a selection of our favorites.

To sleep in Castro Urdiales, the best option is Sercotel Las Rocas, with 4 stars, which has an excellent location for walking to Brazomar beach. Although it has simple decor, this hotel stands out for its warm atmosphere and the availability of its staff. The restaurant has a wide offering of local products as well as great service.

Our next suggestion to sleeping in Castro Urdiales is Ardigales 11, which has certainly earned its two stars. The place has elegant and modern facilities and the space is used very effectively. Also key is its location, just 5 minutes from the beach.

At the Hostal Vista Alegre, the rooms don’t seem to fit in with the rustic facade, since they have modern decor and are very clean. It loses points for being slightly farther from the beach, but it makes up for it by offering free parking. The final option is on our list for its ideal location; the Rico apartments are adequate and have all of the essentials. They also have a pool and parking.

There is also a hotel that’s somewhat more secluded, but offers features that the others above lack. The Agua Viva Hotel & Spa Castro offers a swimming pool, hammam spa, and relaxation area with music therapy. With Indonesian style, this hotel has a terrace where guests can have barbecues.

For sleeping in the town of Ampuero itself there are few options, but if it is your priority, there is Casa Ahedo or Casa del Agua in Marrón, a neighboring town, which are small inns and houses built of stone, preserving the characteristics of typical northern architecture. Both offer very low prices and cozy accommodations.

If you just want to visit the town during the day and spend nights in a location better equipped for relaxing, you can go to the Parador de Limpias, which is a simple hotel located in the town of Limpias, just 9 minutes from Ampuero via car. The hotel occupies a stately palace near the Asón river. And if you don’t mind a bit more driving, 20 minutes north of Ampuero is the Hotel Playamar that, due to its distance from town, offers access to the San Martín and Salvé beaches.

In almost the same location is the Hotel Cosmopol which, in addition to offering views of the of the Bay of Biscay, could not be closer to the church of Santa María. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the center of Laredo, and you can also enjoy its outdoor swimming pool.

In town there are few options, but we assure you that the ones we recommend are worth it. Posada Reserva Verde is located in the historical area of the town, and the highlight of staying there is the kindness of the owners, who are always willing to help with anything you may need while staying in Bárcena Mayor. The common areas are very pleasant and their homemade jams are luxurious, made in the typical style, as well as their Nata de Cantabria cheese.

Posada Rural La Franca also has a family atmosphere, where guests feel satisfied and at ease, and is located in a rustic-style cottage that is very inviting for spending the night. From there you can walk directly to the architectural complex of Bárcena, which you cannot miss if you stop in the town, as well as, of course, Saja-Besaya Natural Park.

There are few hotel options within the city, but we have three options that can make your stay in Cabezón de Sal very rewarding.The Hotel Jardín de Carrejo, with three stars, is great because of its location at the center of town. It is an old stable that is very representative of traditional local houses, with gardens overflowing with charm as well as a jacuzzi. The Santa Lucía apartments are in Carrejo, 1 kilometer away from Cabezón de la Sal. They are highly recommendable for the hospitality of the owners and their close proximity to the town, located a stone’s throw away from all of the key local places: the river, highway, foot path, and gardens for taking a walk.

A little further east, in Cabrojo, is the Hotel Valle de Cabezón, which is special because of its homemade local food, like the cocido montañés and “palucos de cabezón”. With more than 50 years of business, the station welcomes more than 70,000 skiers every year, among which many are Basque and Leonese, as well as Cantabrian, due to its location at the border between several provinces. The complex is divided into 23 slopes that constitute the 30 skiable kilometers, with altitudes ranging from 1,650m at its lowest building to 2,125m at the Tres Mares peak. Alto Campoo also has ski schools, playgrounds, a snow park, a cross-country ski area and various competitions.

During the summer months, the area is used for hiking and cycling. You can access to the station of Alto Campoo directly from the bordering towns of Brañavieja and Reinosa via CA-183. To choose a place to sleep in Alto Campoo or in the surrounding area, here we offer you several options.

The offering for staying close to the ski resort is very small, so it is in the surrounding villages that you will find the smartest sleeping options in Alto Campoo. In the town of Brañavieja, at the foot of the slopes, you’ll find the Hotel Corza Blanca, property of CANTUR, which also has its own ski resort. It was constructed in harmony with the natural rock in order to prepare for all of the potential unforeseen events that can be caused by snow, and has a very welcoming atmosphere with skylights. At the restaurant at the hotel they offer products of the region, which is known for its cheeses and meats, especially the wild boar and deer. Complejo Puente Romano offers an alternative to traditional accommodations, with apartments or squares of land where you can camp outdoors in Alto Campoo. Additionally, if you’re there for any reason related to skiing, they give you a discount. Finally, the Hotel Villa Liguardi, in the nearby town of Proaño, is an estate with exceptional views facing the valley, located about 20 minutes by car from the Alto Campoo station.

This Cantabrian municipality is found in the region of Liébana. What’s special about this place is its location in the park of Picos de Europa, and if you plan to visit Fuente Dé you’ll be able to ride the flying cable car, reaching 1,847 meters high, and enjoy one of the best mountain viewpoints in the country. Where to sleep in Fuente Dé

The Parador de Fuente Dé is our first suggestion for sleeping in Fuente Dé. The hotel is located amongst top-notch natural surroundings, being in the park of Picos de Europa. It is one of the  most sought-after hotels for its great quality and location in the Liébana valley, close to the cable cars of Fuente Dé. It has 77 rustic-style rooms that are very cozy, with large bathrooms and beautiful views.

Another place to stay in this beautiful area is the Hotel Rebeco, where the state of their mattresses is made up for by priceless views. It’s a stone building that stands out primarily for its charm, and integrates very well into the surrounding landscape. If you go in August, the temperature is perfect.

Sleep in Fuente Dé: surroundings

There are also options in the area that, despite not being located within Fuente Dé, are well worth  the stay. The Hotel Jisu is found in Camaleño, 17km away by car, and we think it's ideal because of the view of the Valle del Jisu, seen from the rooms, and that of the Picos de Europa, which can be seen from the pool. The restaurant’s sirloin as well as its canónigo, the typical dessert of Liébana, are both well-known in the area.

Finally, in the nearby town of Cosgaya, just 12km from Fuente Dé, Casona de Treviño is one of the most authentic hotels in the area. It’s in a house with a lot of history, with more than 300 years in service that can be appreciated in the family photographs or the stories that the owners decide to tell you. It’s a great place to rest in between excursions to the Picos de Europa.
