Guide to sleep in Orio
On the right bank of the river of the same name, we come upon Orio, a residential seaside town where you can see the Church of San Nicolás and the Shrine of San Martín, both of which are well worth a visit. The color yellow is everywhere in this town. This is the color of Orio’s trainera (a type of boat), which is the most famous one on the Cantabrian Sea. One of Orio’s main attractions is the beach and the town’s proximity to Pagoeta Natural Park. If you plan on sleeping in Orio, we’ll tell you about the best places to stay.

Vista de la Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari

Río Oria

Where to stay in Orio: old town
Our first suggestion for sleeping in Orio is Hotel Txanka Erreka, which has 11 rooms. The hotel was built on the ruins of an old watermill and is very close to Zarautz and San Sebastián. The facilities are handicap accessible, and if you’re traveling with an infant you can request a crib for your room.

Another option is to stay at the Orio Apartments, located in the center of town, five minutes from the beach by foot. The apartments have modern décor with a black and white color scheme. Their great location makes for some incredible views. They have a private parking lot, and the friendly service is the best part of staying here.

The casa rural Segotegi Etxea is an ideal place for relaxation. Located next to the hills and the beach in the Santio Erreka neighborhood on the outskirts of Orio, it has handball facilities and an area set up for outdoor activities, and they also offer sports equipment and bicycle rentals.

Hotel Txanka Erreka

Orio Apartments

Where to stay in Orio: surroundings
On the outskirts of Orio, a bit far from the town’s historical quarter, you can stay in the casa rural Igeldo. With all the necessities and utilities, it’s comparable to any other casa rural you can find, but what’s unique about Igeldo is that it is found in a natural environment near large cities like San Sebastián.

Casa Rural Igeldo

Sleep in Villanañe
Villanañe is a small medieval town with a fortress that has a famous legend, it revolves around the inhabitants of Villanañe, the village of the Varona. They had the obligation to spend every night from May 1st to the last day of July, with two sticks hitting the pit while reciting: "So that the frogs do not wake the Lord up." This legend has had as a consequence its burlesque name given to the people from the village: the callarranas (shut frogs up). This place is close to the Omecillo and Tumecillo rivers, which irrigate Valdegovía in its path. If you want to sleep in Villanañe, in this page we give you our recommendations.

Torre-Palacio de los Varona

Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción

Where to sleep in Villanañe
If you want to sleep in Villanañe so you will be able to enjoy the maximum of your stay, the rural house Orlegy is our first recommendation.

Sleep in Moreda de Álava
This Riojano-Alaves municipality is well known because of its Feast of the Judas in Holy Week, and its historic center has several points of interest that are essential in a visit to the area. After the walk through Moreda, there are many active tourism activities to practice in the surroundings, and even in the Sierra de Cantabria. If you want to sleep in Moreda de Álava we have made a selection that we detail below.

Detalle de la Iglesia de Santa María

Calle con escudo de armas

Where to sleep in Moreda de Álava
There are no highlighted accommodations to sleep in Moreda de Alava center, just on the surroundings.
Where to sleep in Moreda de Álava surroundings
Like many other municipalities in the area, Moreda has a non-existent hotel offer, so you have to look for accommodation on other near towns. Our first option is the Hotel Palacio Las Pujadas, it is a restored building 5 centuries old that has been rehabilitated for commercial hotel use. It has 24 rooms and 4 suites. It is located 2 km away from Moreda and 10 km from Logroño. It is a beautiful place to stay.

The 4-star Hotel Catalonia las Cañas is located in Viana. It is only 4.5 km away from Moreda de Álava and next to a shopping center with cinema and bowling. The highlight of this hotel is its price, which is very low considering that it is 5 km away from Logroño, where prices are tripled.

The rest of the hotels that you can find in the surroundings are concentrated mainly in Logroño, Laguardia or Elciego. The AC Hotel La Rioja, a 4-star Marriott Lifestyle Hotel in Logroño is a hotel located in the vicinity of the Ebro River. The elegance of the rooms and other facilities such as sauna, Turkish bath and spa make this accommodation a complete place to spend the night.

Palacio de las Pujadas

Catalonia las Cañas

It has many places of interest to visit as a result of its historical past. For example, you will be able to visit the church of San Pedro Lamuza, the sanctuary of Santa María de Yermo or the Ugarte tower. You will also be able to do hiking in the nearby Gorbea Natural Park. If you want to know where to sleep in Llodio, in this page we give you our recommendations.

Museo Vasco de la Gastronomía

Estacion de ferrocarril

Where to sleep in Llodio
The Hotel Errekagain is located in a rustic building really close to Herriko Square and near the estuary of Bilbao. This hotel stands out because it is on the outskirts of town in a quiet place.

If you want to sleep in Llodio, the Hotel Valle de Ayala is another of our proposals.

Sleep in Laguardia
This municipality of the Rioja Alavesa has a mainly wine leisure offer but also has other activities and places of interest such as the dolmens route, the Hoya Town (Poblado de la Hoya) or the Ignatian Way (Camino Ignaciano), which recreates the path of Ignacio de Loyola. If you plan to sleep in Laguardia we have a few suggestions where you can spend the night.

Bodega de Ysios

Dolmen

Where to sleep in Laguardia
Our first suggestion to sleep in Laguardia is the four stars Sercotel Villa de Laguardia. It is a very elegant hotel with a beautiful decoration with details such as vaults over the pool. It has a spa and pool where you will be able to relax with treatments based on wine and oil offered by the hotel. If you like attic style rooms you can book one on the third floor.

The second place we want to suggest you is the Hospederia de los Parajes. It offers 18 complete rooms in a natural environment. This accommodation is inside an old mansion. It has a style that combines ancient and modern elements very well. The bar located in the cellars is perfect for having a wine after a session of massages and spa. In the restaurant, we suggest you asking for the asparagus.

Finally, we suggest you the Hotel Castillo el Collado is located also in Laguardia. This is an old castle located in the countryside. Each of its 10 rooms are decorated in a different style. In addition, the history that there is in this castle gives it that special charm that characterizes it.

Sercotel Villa Laguardia

Hospedería los Parajes

Castillo El Collado

Where to sleep in Laguardia surroundings
Beyond Laguardia, in the area there are many places that are interesting to visit. 8 km away, in Samaniego, we propose the Hotel Palacio de Samaniego, there you will have a perfect stay close to Laguardia. It is a historic building that is surrounded by gardens and vineyards. The rustic but elegant rooms are perfect, there you will be able to relax. It is also important visiting the San Andres Church or its numerous palaces. If you want to sleep in Elciego keep reading because in this page we are telling you our favourite places to sleep in Elciego and its surroundings.

Marqués de Riscal

Iglesia Parroquial de San Andrés

Where to sleep in Elciego
Our first recommendation to sleep in Elciego is the Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a Luxury Collection. Yes, this is its complete name and the hotel is as complete as its name. The hotel has its own winery and spa and it is surrounded by vineyards. Within its majestic architectural structure, the hotel rooms stand out because of their curves and luxury. The spa Vinotherapie Caudalie Marqués de Riscal offers different treatments with grapes. Its black granite bathrooms are enormous.

Another good place to sleep in Elciego is the Agroturismo Valdelana. There you will be able to try a nice rioja wine. It has light rooms and the breakfast is very rich. They also offer a tour to its wine cellars and its wine museum, two perfect plans. It is a perfect accommodation to sleep in Elciego.

The Casa Rojanda is a rural house located 5 minutes walking away of Elciego centre. We loved this option because of its design and its cubic architecture. The corridors and rooms of the hotel have art works, and it also has a wine cellar. The most special thing about this hotel are its views of the Sierra de Cantabria, and all its guests are delighted with its excellent breakfast.

Hotel Viura exterior

Hotel Viura interior

The decoration of its rooms is very simple but they are well equipped and complete. A really good point is that the hotel is located at a point where you can move around the Basque Country without having to travel many kilometers. The restaurant has a really good quality-price ratio and the breakfast they offer is pleasantly appreciated by the guests.

16 km away from Gazeo is the Legaire Etxea, this is another option to sleep in the area, in the town of Ibarguren.

Sleep in Salinas de Añana - Gesaltza Añana
Salinas de Añana - Gesaltza Añana is the oldest town in Alava. It has an extraordinary salt farm converted into salty springs. It has been declared Cultural Heritage and Historic Monument. If you are a hiking lover, Salinas de Añana is really close to the Natural Park of Valderejo. The wine tourism is also really famous in the area because they produce the famous txakolí de Álava. If you want to sleep in Salinas de Añana, in this page we give you a list with our recommendations so keep reading to know them.
Where to sleep in Salinas de Añana – Gesaltza Añana
The truth is there is not a big accommodation offer in Salinas de Añana. However, we recommend you the Casa Rural Madera y Sal. It is a modest accommodation in the heart of Salinas. Most of the rooms are dormered. Its cleanliness and bright stand out. Clients of this place highlight the owner treatment, she is so kind. The breakfast is another strong point, whenever you are hungry, ask for it. To sum up, this is a really good place to sleep in Salinas de Añana.

Casa Rural Madera y Sal

Where to sleep in Salinas de Añana – Gesaltza Añana surroundings
If you want to sleep in Salinas de Añana you have seen that there is a small offer, but we also suggest you staying in some close towns. The Caserío Maribel in Aprícano is an excellent option to spend the night. As most of the rural accommodations we recommend it has really kind owners. In this place they have homemade liqueurs and they are really good.

If you are up to staying a bit farther from Salinas de Añana centre, the Albergue Cantoblanco is located in an old medieval tower. The hearth and the design of the tower make the environment a very comfortable one. This place has rooms for people with reduced mobility. It is a simple accommodation but it invites to spend some peaceful days.

Caserío Maribel

Albergue Canto Blanco

Sleep in Salvatierra - Agurain
In the northeastern part of the province of Álava we find Salvatierra - Agurain. This town has an important historic complex. If you are in the town you can’t miss visiting the ruins of the Guevara Castle or the Olbeas de Auguran. You can visit the whole town in some hours and if you have some extra days you can also visit the Natural Park of Sierra de Entzia. If you are looking for the best place to sleep in Salvatierra - Agurain, in this page you will find our recommendations.

Sierra de Entzia

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

Where to sleep in Salvatierra - Agurain
If you want to sleep in Salvatierra - Agurain you will have to keep in mind that the accommodation offer is really limited, we only found two accommodations worth to be recommended. The first one is the Casa Rural Zadorra Etxea, it is a stone and wood farm more than 200 years old. It still has its rustic style but the place is practical and comfortable after its renovation. The rural house offers 6 rooms to stay. One of the rooms is enabled for people with disabilities. In general this is a place well integrated in the environment.

The second recommendation that we are going to suggest you is the José Mari “el Gordo”. This is an accommodation located in Salvatierra too. It offers a simple but complete lodging service. Its quality-price ratio is very good according to its facilities and quality. In addition to that, if you are a pilgrim doing the Way to Santiago you will be able to enjoy some discounts.

Zadorra Etxea

Where to sleep in Salvatierra - Agurain surroundings
If you don’t need to sleep in Salvatierra and you prefer staying in the surroundings there are other options on the close towns. We suggest you the Parador de Argómaniz just 14 minutes by car of Salvatierra. This is one of our favourite accommodations in the area. It is located in a hill with views to the Alavese plain and the Urbasa and Gorbea mountains. The hotel is in a splendid Renaissance palace where Napoleon stopped to recover his strength before attacking the city of Vitoria.

Parador de Argomaniz

Sleep in Avellaneda
Avellaneda is located in las Encartaciones – a region of Spain in the Basque country – and belongs to the municipality of Sopuerta. Avellaneda is best known for the Encartaciones Museum, which focuses on the history of the region from its past to the present day. If you decide to discover Avellaneda for yourself and want to know the best place to stay, read our recommendations below.
Where to sleep in Avellaneda
Because Avellaneda has a small population, there are limited options for hotels and lodging within the town. Hotel Batzarki has six double rooms, each of which have unique decorations and a full bathroom. Their restaurant is known for its squid and Idiazábal cheese, which is famous in the region. You can explore the surrounding nature through cycling, biking, and other types of active tourism.

Hotel Batzarki

Sleep in Avellaneda: Surroundings
There are more options on the outskirts of Avellaneda, such as in the Mercadillo neighborhood, which is only a six-minute car ride to Avellaneda. Here you can find Casa Rural Enkartada, which is a charming retreat that has four rooms and a lovely garden. The owners will help you with everything you need to know about the area, and the hotel is pet-friendly. Casa Rural Enkartada is the perfect place to spend the night despite not being in the center of Avellaneda.

Our last recommendation is Urrezko Ametsa, a cottage with six rooms, a jacuzzi, a library, and a small gym. Although Urrezko Ametsa is very rustic and simple, the friendly owners and the garden with a barbeque makes this option stand out. It is the perfect location, situated in the middle of Castro Urdiales and Bilbao.

Casa Rural Enkartada

Casa Rural Urrezko Ametsa

Sleep in Plentzia - Plencia
In the metropolitan area of Bilbao, you will find the coastal municipality of Plencia. Plencia is a cozy town which was known for having one of the main ports of Biscay during the Middle Ages. Its ancient estuary was buried with sand and became a wonderful beach that is now a top summer destination. There are many activities such as surfing, horseback riding, canoeing, or hot-air balloon rides, which makes Plencia a fun destination for all. If you want to stay in this scenic area, here are some of our top recommendations for hotels and lodging.

Pont neuf

Château de Butron

Where to sleep in Plentzia - Plencia
There are many special sleeping accommodations in Plencia. We like Hotel Kaian for its attention to detail and room selection. The décor of the rooms gives a feeling of restfulness. There are three types of rooms, which vary in size and whether they have a jacuzzi or not. Some of the rooms are attics, which offers a unique setting for sleep. Their restaurant specializes in grilled meats and mojitos.

Hotel Uribe Kosta is a good choice for its prime location and the value for its price. It is located next to metro stops that connect to Bilbao. You can sip vermouth in the hotel´s bar and restaurant, located on a beautiful terrace with a spectacular view of the Bilbao estuary.

Hotel Kaian

Restuarante hotel Uribe Kosta

Sleep in Plentzia - Plencia: Surroundings
Towards the outskirts of Plencia, you can find the Hotel NH La Avanzada, which is located near Gexto. Here, you are only a short walk to the beach and you are very close to other attractions such as the Guggenheim of Bilbao. The elegant rooms are a clear display of the hotel´s four-star rating. If you are in Plencia for business, Hotel NH La Avanzada provides meeting rooms and a gym.

NH La Avanzada

Tips on Places to Stay in Portugalete
Found at the mouth of the Nervión Rier, Portugalete is known for its suspension transporter bridge, the first of its kind in the world. In the Middle Ages, Portugalete was the stage of intense battles between knights, but there’s not much for tourists to see here, so exploring the town only takes a few hours. To continue your trip, you can cross over the bridge and spend the rest of your time in Plentzia or Getxo. At any rate, while you’re in Portugalete you should visit Santa Clara Convent and Plaza de la Ranchería, as well as some other places of interest. Keep reading for our selection of the best places to stay in Portugalete.

Puente colgante

Basílica de Santa María

Places to Stay in Portugalete
Arguably the best place to stay in Portugalete is Puente Colgante Grand Hotel, a luxurious mansion which has been renovated except for its 200-year-old façade. It is located at the foot of the Suspension Bridge of Biscay. The hotel offers 74 rooms with views of the sea and the Bilbao Estuary. The premises can be rented for weddings and other events, personal as well as business-related.

Our second suggestion is the URH Oriol Mansion, a four-star establishment which has everything you’ll need for a 10-out-of-10 stay. The only potential downsides are its location next to train tracks or the slightly steep prices. With the appearance of an old castle, it has 88 rooms and conference rooms that can accommodate all kinds of events. Its bar serves some excellent coffee.

Hotel Gran Hotel Puente Colgante

URH Palacio de Oriol

Places to Stay Near Portugalete
In the area surrounding Portugalete there’s a wide variety of places to spend the night, including Getxo, Plentzia, and Bilbao, but we’re going to give you a unique recommendation in Sestao. The Sestao Naval Hotel is housed inside a building that was designed to look like a boat. The rooms are simple but well-equipped, and their mattresses are particularly comfortable. Both the Bilbao Exhibition Centre and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao are easily accessible from this hotel.

Hotel Naval Sestao

Tips on Places to Stay in Markina-Xemein
In the Biscayan comarca of Lea-Artibai we can find Markina-Xemein, a town that shares a border with Gipuzkoa and owes its name to its defensive efforts against the historical attacks by their neighbors from Gipuzkoa. If you visit Xemein, you can’t leave without stopping at Plaza Goiko, where you’ll find some of the town’s most important landmarks including El Carmen Convent and Church and the town hall. If you’re on the hunt for a place to stay in Markina-Xemein, keep reading for a list of our favorite accommodations.

Government Building

Goiko Square

Places to Stay in Markina-Xemein
There are no places to stay in Markina-Xemein itself, but you can consider staying in one of the surrounding towns.
Places to Stay Near Markina-Xemein
The selection of places to stay in Markina-Xemein is not just scarce, it’s nonexistent. Our first suggestion for places to spend the night is Satzu House, a five-century-old mansion which has been refurbished while still preserving the original structure. It is located three kilometers from Xemein in Ubilla-Urberuaga. It consists of six rooms, some with private bathrooms and others with shared bathrooms, so make sure to confirm which one you’ll have when you make your reservation. The price of breakfast is not included, but it’s delicious and worth the money.

Another one of our recommendations is Intxauspe House, located in the fourth stage of the Camino de Santiago along the Northern Coast (Deba-Markina) and five minutes walking from Xemein. It has six double rooms and pretty grounds with a garden and fruit trees. If you stay here, you can partake in various outdoor activities on Santa Eufemia Hill and Kalamua y Oiz Hill, and you can also take advantage of several hiking trails.

Hotel Antsotegi is another place that we like because of its location; in Extebarría, it’s just a few minutes from Xemein by car. The hotel has cozy common spaces including a dining room with an open floor plan, which gives the hotel a hint of grandeur. The friendliness of the owners is what wins over guests, and if you dine at the hotel’s restaurant, you can enjoy some delicious Basque dishes.

Casa Rural Satzu

Casa Rural Intxauspe

Hotel Antsotegi

It was the headquarters of the Juntas of Bizkaia, making it the first governmental body in the area. Gernika and Lumo is also known for the bombing it endured during the Spanish Civil War, which has been immortalized in Picasso’s famous painting, Guernica. Some must-see sights include la Casa de Juntas (the House of Meetings) and the Árbol de Guernica (the Tree of Guernica). If you are thinking of staying in Gernika, read our suggestions below for the best hotels and lodging.
Where to sleep in Gernika - Lumo
If you want to stay in the center of Gernika, Hotel Gernika is one of the few accommodations in the city.

Sleep in Elantxobe - Elanchove
Elantxobe is one of the 19 municipalities part of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Elantxobe is known as “the town that hangs from the cliff,” since the city has been built on the slope of a cliff. If you want to sleep in Elantxobe, below you can find some of our top recommendations.
Where to sleep in Elantxobe - Elanchove
If you want to stay in the center of Elantxobe, we recommend Itsasmin Ostatua. The location is great for surfing, canoeing, diving, cycling, and fishing on the nearby beaches such as Laga Beach and Laida Beach. If you want a good view, ask for a room on the third floor. Another accommodation worth mentioning is Casa Rural Ogoño Mendi, which is located on the outskirts of the village and has priceless views from the cliffs.

Itsasmin Ostatua

Casa Rural Ogoño Mendi

Sleep in Elantxobe - Elanchove: Surroundings
Close to Elanxtobe but beyond its borders you can find Hotel Spa Gametxo, which is located on a hill between the beaches of Laida and Laga in the neighboring village of Ibarrangelu. This rural house is built from an old winery that still has parts of its original structure preserved, such as its wooden beams. Special details about this accommodation include the 24-hour self-serve coffee they have available and the bottle of txakolí (a dry white wine produced in Northern Spain) they usually have in the fridge.

Hotel Spa Gametxo

H&AP Rural Merrutxu

Sleep in Elorrio
Elorrio is a town known for its historic district of palaces, made of monasteries and stone manor houses that are well-preserved to this day. The area was declared a historic-artistic site in 1964. Elorrio borders Guipúzcoa and is next to Mt. Udalaitz. If you want to discover all that Elorrio has to offer, read our top recommendations for hotels and lodging below.

Ermita de San Adrián

Fachada del Ayuntamiento

Where to sleep in Elorrio
If you want to stay in the center of Elorrio, a good option is Hotel Elorrio, which is in the neighborhood of San Agustín. We like this hotel because it has a good value for its price, the beds are comfortable, and there are business rooms throughout all the floors for meetings and conferences.

Another option is Casa Rural Patxi Errege, which is only a short walk to the center of Elorrio and offers 3 guest rooms. This rural cottage is known for being a good place to stay if you are interested in hiking, especially since it is 10km from the natural reserve of Urquiola.

Hotel Elorrio

Casa Rural Patxi Errege

Sleep in Elorrio: Surroundings
If you are looking to stay on the outskirts of Elorrio, there are a couple options in the village of Elgeta, which is part of Guipúzcoa, but is only a few minutes to Elorrio by car. The first recommendationis Casa Rural Maialde, which we like for its spacious and light-filled rooms. Their restaurant is very good. If you are looking for a more economical alternative, Hostal Eguzkitza is a good choice.

On the outskirts of Elorrio in the neighboring village of Berrio you can find Casa Rural Berriolope. Although this accommodation has a rather rustic style, it is a great place to escape the bustle of Elorrio and have a restful sleep. Their restaurant, located on the same street as the house, is worth a try.

Casa Rural Maialde

Casa Rural Berriolope
