Eating in Orbaneja del Castillo
Orbaneja del Castillo is a town from Burgos and is located in the Sedano Valley almost in the border with Cantbria. It is a charming place that has been declared Historic Artistic Centre. You must stop here if you are in the province of Burgos.

What to eat in Orbaneja del Castillo
The cuisine from Orbaneja del Castillo is mainly focussed on big and heavy dishes such as the cocido de alubias with embutidos and on carnes a la piedra. Try the fried chorizo from Villarcayo and the morcilla.

Eating in Orbaneja del Castillo, as you may imagine, is all of a experience for the senses. Here you can find a selection of the best places to go if you want to eat in Orbaneja del Castillo.

Tapas
It is possible to eat "de tapas" in Orbaneja del Castillo if you stay in the bar of the different restaurants of the area. We would like to stand out the Mesón Casa Estela, a big house located in the centre of the town that offers a menu full of raciones and pinchos. If you have time, we suggest going into the restaurant and ordering a main dish with an excellent bottle of wine.

Another option is the Restaurante El Rincón which tends to have tasty and delicious meat. Don't forget to try their beans!!

Mesón Casa Estela

Bar - Restaurante El Rincón

A la Carte
Eating in Orbaneja del Castillo is almost a ritual so sitting down for lunch or dinner is a great idea.

Eating in Mombeltran
In this town, you will find all kinds of vegetables, fruits and legumes directly from the garden. Additionally, if you are looking for a filling dish, the Avila meat is an unbeatable option. There is not much variety within Mombeltran’s restaurants, but its cuisine is delicious and full of quality products.
What to eat in Mombeltran
Mombeltran, a village honored with the Castle of the Dukes of Alburquerque, emerges as an ideal place for the cultivation of all kinds of vegetables, legumes and fruits. It has an extensive population of breeding animals, so it is an area with terrific cuisine. If you want to know what to eat in Mombeltrán we suggest the chuleton de Avila, with an official brand (pork chop made from Avila meat that possess I.G.P.), competing in quality and recognition with the caldereta de cabrito. In their recipes you can observe influence from Extremadura cuisine, but Mombeltran doesn’t lose its territorial distinction.

The Mombeltran diet is based on dishes whose main ingredients are legumes and potatoes, and products from hunting, like sausage, ham or bacon. Other frequent dishes in this town located in the Barranco Valley, are the patatas revolconas, common throughout the region, the sopa de cachuelas, the wild asparagus tortilla and the Tietar crabs in salsa.

During Easter celebrations, during the celebration of the Monda it is tradition to sample tortilla with sausage, loin and ham in a bread roll. As for bakeries, you will find many types of pastries but the best are the perrunillas, the bizcocho de San Esteban, the rosquillas de escaldaillo, the nuegados, empanadas de cabello de angel, arrope and the calostros. During Christmas, the classics are polvorones, nevaditos and mantecaditos.
Tapas
At bar El Baila you will find tapas and dishes, like the stuffed avocados. Perfect to go with the family or a large group, the meat here has a good reputation. You can eat a tapas lunch or dinner!

El Baila

A la carte
There are several restaurants and bars where you can eat in Mombeltran and we will mention some of them. In the Rincón del Ángel you will find traditional cuisine with a creative touch in a mid-19th century house with a charming terrace. They serve cuchifrito, bacalao con pisto, patatas revolconas…a wide variety of options!

In the restaurant Los Chapales, with a summer terrace, you can enjoy traditional cuisine at an affordable price. It is the perfect location to celebrate any event. Their arroz ibérico will surprise you.

Los Chapales

El Rincón del Angel

Eating in Navas del Marques
Navas del Marques, a town located in the southern part of the Sierras in Malagon, is a popular tourist spot and has one of the largest populations within Castile and Leon. If you are going to eat in Navas del Marques we recommend trying the chuleton de Avila and one of its flavorful stews. Additionally, eating tapas in Navas del Marques is delightful, since there are several festivals celebrating tapas in the town.
Eating in Navas del Marques
If you want to know what to eat in Navas del Marques we recommend the torreznos-with patatas meneás or revolconas, called the pote navero-, the morcilla- with locally made onion- or the loin- pickled with a slice of bread. The chuleton de Avila, spectacular part of the juicy grilled Avila meat with I.G.P., is one of the famous specialties within this area, usually accompanied with a side of potatoes.

In addition to the potato stews with rabbit, cod, potatoes or sausage; the Castile soup isn’t bad with bread seasoned with garlic and paprika, a poached egg and ham. Navas del Marques is located in a pine forest where you can find a variety of mushrooms. In 2013, they celebrated the Jornadas Gastronómicas de Setas y Recetas for the first time and, due to its success, now they celebrate three festivals throughout the year. During a weekend in March De Tapas por Las Navas: Jornadas de Puchero y Mantaza takes place and the establishments offer stews in the morning and game meat in the afternoon. In July, during the fiestas patronales, they celebrate De Tapas por las Navas, with a tapas competition and in the fall, coinciding with the mushroom harvest, Micotapas takes place.

Navas del Marques also offers two types of sweets: the mantecados and the bollos de leche con anís. The first is a dessert made from butter, sugar and almonds that is normally enjoying around Christmas. The bollos de leche is a soft crumbly cake with a light aniseed flavor.
Tapas
The restaurant Montecarlo supports market cuisine with a creative touch. An interesting option, especially if your visit coincides with some of the culinary festivals. This is the perfect place to order patatas revolconas.

Another restaurant that you must keep in mind is Mogambo, perfect for enjoying tapas. If you order the ensaladilla rusa or hamburguesa de buey you will leave more than satisfied.

And for our third option we recommend the restaurant Elio’s with both traditional and modern dishes. Their croquetas are incredible.

Mogambo

Elio´s

A la carte
If you are looking for a place to eat in Navas del Marques, a town that practically triples its population during the summer months and receives many visitors, you will find several grills, taverns, restaurants, bars and cafes. Along its main streets and around the village you can enjoy dishes typical of the area.

In Magalia they prepare grilled meat and fish. In addition to an extensive menu, the restaurant is ideal for every type of celebration and event. Here you can find quality roasted and grilled meat.

Magalia

Eating in Piedrahita
Piedrahita is the perfect place to sample all the typical Avilan dishes. The pastries are the star products here, with sweets so good you’ll want to lick your fingers. Additionally, there are plenty of restaurants and bars where you can taste the wonderful pastries. Come with us to eat in Piedrahita!
What to eat in Piedrahita
In the capital of the Corneja Valley, the Castilian cuisine enjoys a fusion with Extrmaduran and Salamancan cuisine. So, if you are thinking about what to eat in Piedrahita, you should know that dishes like the patatas revolconas are combined with the sopas de vino and the sopa de cachuela.

The local cuisine is based on meat products like Avilan beef, pork –especially the suckling pig- and game meat. The torreznos, chichas, calderetas, migas de pastor and morcilla de calabaza are also some of the dishes that stand out. These dishes are perfect for regaining strength after visiting this historic village, and former residence of the Dukes of Alba, Goya and Jovellanos.

Because of its proximity to El Barco de Avila, an area with a variety of Judías de El Barco with I.G.P., we find typical dishes like the judías con perdiz. During autumn, the multitude of dishes with mushrooms as the main component surprised us. In Piedrahita, pastries are also popular, especially the buñuelos, floretas, turrillos, huesos de santo, leche frita, mantecados and perrunillas.
Tapas
In the bar La Cabaña they prepare excellent toast, especially the tosta de boletus con foie. Their various croquetas are the perfect dish to share and try their original recipes. Their tapas and wines are also popular for their excellent quality.

Bar La Cabaña

A la carte
You will find many establishments where you can eat in Piedrahita, we will only highlight some of them. El Rubio offers traditional cuisine with a modern twist. Their daily specials are handmade and include an assortment of food at a good price. The restaurant decorations may not be the most modern, in fact quite the opposite is true, but that doesn’t change the quality of the food.

The restaurant Goya offers a cuisine based on tradition. This restaurant is like our previous option, with nothing modern, but it is still an exceptional meal. The patatas revolconas with torreznos, lasaña de carne and boletus, and mousse de queso con membrillo are delicious! In the hostel restaurant Gran Duque you will find traditional cuisine and a simple menu, without much charm. Breakfast is the most popular meal here.

El Rubio

Restaurante Hostal Gran Duque

Eating in Madrigal de Altas Torres
In the middle of the Morañega prarie is the walled village of Madrigal de las Altas Torres. This village is of Mudejar impression and was the birthplace for Isabel the Catholic. To eat in Madrigal de las Altas Torres we recommend the patatas revolconas. If you enjoy tapas, you will find delicious torreznos, among many other specialties. Delicious!
What to eat in Madrigal de Altas Torres
If you want to know what to eat in Madrigal de las Altas Torres, we encourage you to try its specialties, the patatas revolconas and the morcilla de calabaza. The patatas revolconas (also known as meneás or removidas), are a simple and tasty dish. They are made from mashed potatoes seasoned with a mix of garlic and paprika (generally sweet) and added to crispy torreznos that give a contrast in textures.

The morcilla de calabaza is a cured meat that is tiresome to prepare and can be served in many forms. During hunting season, the pig fat is removed, seasoned with paprika and mixed with onion, pumpkin, rice and various spices. Once cured, it is ideal to eat it hot on village bread, or cold if it is sliced or grilled. Another typical meat is the chorizo de olla. If you like to eat tapas, we dare you to try the torreznos, picadillo and the callos that are typical of this village.

Wash down this culinary experience with a great Vino Rueda or Ribera del Duero, both with D.O. Try the huseos de santo, and the almond, potato or lemon sweets typical of this province or the yemas de Avila (a sweet made with egg yolk and sugar) perfect to eat with coffee.
A la carte
There are not many restaurants to choose from in Madrigal de las Altas Torres so we recommend the restaurant Casa Lucio that offers a menu with traditional cuisine. Its delicious cuisine will leave you satisfied. The dining room doesn’t have TVs, so you can focus on conversations.

Restaurante Casa Lucio

Eating in Candeleda
The town of Candeleda, located in the Tietar Valley, has a variety of native products served in traditional and simple dishes. If you are going to eat in Candeleda don’t miss its pimentón or sausage. Tapas are also a good option if you are looking for a quick meal.
What to eat in Candeleda
The climate in Candeleda is terrific for rich gardens that produce quality fruits, vegetables and legumes. Candeleda cuisine greatly influences Extemadura cuisine due to its close proximity. The pepper, popularly called the cornicabra, is outstanding and comes from the famous handmade Pimentón de Candeleda that gives dishes a special and unmistakable smell and look.

If you want to know what to eat in Candeleda a typical dish is the Sierra potatoes, seasoned with garlic and paprika, and accompanied with torreznos. Another popular dish is the migas, originally made in the country, made with bread, sausage, fried peppers, potatoes and paprika. Sausage is popular during the San Blas Celebration, when they celebrate Sausage Day. It is customary to enjoy the sausage with a donut.

In summer, when the heat surpasses 35 degrees, dishes are made with ingredients from the gardens, like rin ran, zucchini and gazpacho. Candeleda never lacks goat, both roasted and fried, as well as the suckling pig and Avilan beef. Cheeses made of goat milk are also typical. If you like fruit, you will enjoy the seasonal picota cherries and the “cuello de dama” figs.

As for pastries, the roscas de San Blas are famous, as well as the magdalenas, perrunillas, mantecados and floretas de miel. If you are planning to visit Candeleda we recommend looking at specific culinary events like: Jornadas Micológicas, Concurso de Tapas, Feria del Queso de Cabra and Feria del Pimentón.
Tapas
In Plaza Mayor, you will find Casa Pepe that offers traditional cuisine, here the paté de cabrito is noteworthy. The portion sizes here are perfect. If you are passing through and looking for a quick meal Los Malagueños may be an option, although if you have time to truly enjoy the local cuisine it would be better to visit a different restaurant.

Casa Pepe

Los Malagueños

A la carte
The grill restaurant Los Carretero has a terrace and a garden with a children’s playground. It also has beautiful views of the central massif of Gredos and the Almanzor peak. It is suitable for celebrations of any type. It is the perfect restaurant to visit with the family and eat tender chuletas de ternera.

The restaurant Majavenero offers dishes made with seasonal products. The stewed beans are amazing. They have daily specials with a price range that works for everyone.

In the hostel restaurant Los Castañuelos the main dish is the goat, but they prepare great sides in addition to the main course. It is a normal looking restaurant that will surprise you.

Los Carretero

Los Castañuelos

Eating in Avila
Surrounded by the best-preserved enclosure in Europe, the Avila wall, is this locality, where the chuletón steak is a main dish. Here meat is one of the most consumed dishes. For eating in Avila, you have multiple options to choose from. Gastronomic variety! Also, eating tapas in Avila is another great option. Let’s go!
What to eat in Avila
This city guards within its walls a surprise for visiting travelers. Its gastronomy is based in products of the province as well as fruit from its varied climate and the different cultures in its population. When deciding what to eat in Avila, you should know that the most prominent local dish is the Chuleton de Avila, with the official brand (a steak of Carne de Avila that has I.G.P.), cooked on the grill, and it cannot be missed. The asados also have an earned reputation, whether they be goat from the area of Candeleda, suckling pig from the northern part of the province, or lamb from Valle Ambles, all cooked in a firewood oven.

The local legumes also deserve their earned fame, and proof of this is the Judias de El Barco de Avila with I.G.P. (seven varieties) and the carillas, another variety (small white bean with a black spot). Typical recipes are the roasted potatoes (with paprika from Candeleda and torreznos) and cuchifrito (a stew, often made amongst cattlemen and shepherds, with chopped pork that is fried once it’s half-cooked, then seasoned with spices, vinegar and paprika).

Restaurante Labrador

The menus of most restaurants offer trout—fried, roasted, or picked and no longer just from the Tormes and Alberche rivers, as it used to be—and also cod, prepared in diverse ways—with arriero garlic, with pepper sauce, battered… And if you like getting tapas, pair your drink with a small portion of empanada, sweetbreads, callos…Remember that during the last weekend in July the town celebrates the Concurso Avila en Tapas, a competition in which the best tapas offered by bars, restaurants and inns win.

Wash down these dishes with a good Vino Rueda or Ribera del Duero, both wines with D.O., produced in Avila. For local desserts you’ll be offered in-season fruit: reinetas apples from the Barco de Avila, figs from the valley of Poyales, cherries from the Tiétar Valley or homemade pastries: huesillos, natillas, leche frita, etc…And don’t forget to try the famous yemas (yolks) of Santa Teresa, candies with a base of eggs yolk and sugar that are exclusive to the city.
Tapas
For tapas, you can go to a few distinct areas: In Dr. Fleming you’ll find many inns; Plaza Nalvillos, on the street of San Segundo, a lot of activity; the Plaza del Mercado Chico, etc…

At the Bar Mangas you’ll find good tapas at a good price. On the other hand, La Casona Fusion has an indoor patio that will transport you to another time period. Perfect for sharing plates. The quality of their breakfasts particularly stands out.

Another notable restaurant is La Bruja (at the hotel Las Leyendas), which serves traditional Avila cuisine with Argentine touches. Perfect for ordering a few tapas, such as their serving of empanadillas.

La Flor de Castilla, an old confectionary famous for their yemas, has been converted into a gourmet store and restaurant. If you’re looking for something to snack on and want to bring a product home to enjoy, this is your place.

La Flor de Castilla

La Bruja

A la carte
With great touristic affluence, it’s not strange that many of the most recommendable restaurants in Avila are found in hotels. The restaurant at the hotel Las Cancelas, with a beautiful indoor patio, is a Castilian classic with a touch of innovation, splendid croquettes and delicious torreznos. The Avilanian chuletón steak and the lamb, grilled or baked, are also great.

Piedras Albas (in the Parador de Avila) and La Puerta del Alcazar, are restaurants that offer, in addition to their individual menu, menus for groups. If you’re looking for plates of meat these restaurants are a great option.

El Almacen, located outside the Avila wall, is, without any doubt, the best restaurant in the city. Traditional and creative recipes accompanied by a spectacular wine cellar. The menu combines tradition with modern touches. We recommend the magnificent views of the wall while you eat cocochas de merluez al pil pil, a highly acclaimed dish amongst those who have dined there.

Hidden on a street where it seems as though nearly no one pases is Los Candiles, a small dining room that’s always crowded and boasts of serving the best Chuleton de Avila. They also have suckling pig, lamp chops, redondo of veal and some splendid roasted potatoes with torreznos.

Las Cancelas

Los Candiles

Eating in El Barco de Avila
In the southern part of the Avila province, we stumble upon El Barco de Avila, a perfect place to enjoy the cuisine of Castile and Leon. Here, beans are the main dish. If you are looking for tapas, the Aila ham will leave you pleased. Come with us to eat in El Barco de Avila!
What to eat in El Barco de Avila
In recent years, El Barco de Avila has become an attractive spot for tourism, not only for its beautiful location and historical and artistic monuments, but also for its main culinary product, the judiones. Castile and Leon boast having a variety of legumes and for this town, it is their most prominent product. The Judia de El Barco de Avila, located in the Tormes Valley, was the first Spanish product to have Protected Geographical Indication.

There are seven distinct varieties of beans: judia blanca redonda – the most well-known-, the blanca riñón- the most demanded-, the morada –long or round, the arrocina, the planchada and the judión, the largest which can be white, black or marbled. Every type is characterized by its smooth texture and delicate skin, flavor and ease to cook. There are many ways to cook the different types of beans; stewed, cooked, baked etc. Nowadays they combine the beans with different ingredients like mushrooms, sausage, shrimp etc.

But there are other dishes to eat in El Barco de Avila, like trout from the Tormes river, prepared in various ways: marinated, grilled, baked or smoked. Additionally, the rabbit, hare, potatoes and embutidos are among other dishes that stand out in El Barco de Avila. Among the embutidos, the Avila ham and lomo embuchado are noteworthy.
Tapas
The restaurant Casa Lucio is perfect for eating tapas. You will find delicious potatoes and creamy croquettes with blood sausage and ham. The alubias con chorizo and oreja are also an excellent option to share.

Eating in Arevalo
In the northern part of the province of Avila we find Arevalo, a place of great meat dishes such as roasted suckling pig, also known as tostón. And for dessert? Some delicious torjillas! If you’re looking to eat in Arevalo, the local offering includes many asadores.
What to eat in Arevalo
If you’re thinking about eating in Arevalo, we advise that it’s an ideal place for enjoying a good tostón (roasted suckling pig) or a lamb or goat roasted in the Castilian style in one of the establishments that populate the streets of the town. There’s also the Judías de El Barco de Avila (beans with I.G.P.), like the garbanzos of Arevalo, known for their high quality, which are a main ingredient in the cocido castellano (Castilian stew) that you can enjoy accompanied by various pork products—chorizo, fresh bacon, blood sausage with onion…—and vegetables (leek, cabbage, carrot).

Arevalo is also a good place for having some Castilian soup, consisting of broth served with bread, poached egg, and ham, seasoned with garlic and paprika, which is normally sweet. Since 2009, between February and March, Arevalo has celebrated the Jornadas Gastronómicas Tostón de Ávila o Cochinillo in the restaurants belonging to the Arevalo Association of Hospitality, and it is a good occasion for visiting this beautiful Moorish town. In the region of Arevalo, Albar pine trees (or piñoneros, pinus pinea) are abundant, and the locals harvest their edible pine nuts. During Holy Week, the town offers the opportunity to taste their delicious traditional sweets, the torrijas (a kind of French toast) and the roznaques, that latter of which is prepared with a sweetened cake with a light anise flavor that’s fried in the form of elongated or ringed cylinders.
Tapas
For high-quality pinchos, Vinilandia is a good place. A perfect bar for having a small callos tapa with a very fresh beer.

The bar Pavero has a good variety of tapas and pinchos with all kinds of recipes. Also, their dessert menu is pure temptation.

Bar Pavero

Vinilandia

A la carte
Here we highlight a few of the many recommendable asadores where you can eat in Arevalo that feature tostón as their star dish.

At the restaurant La Pinilla, the Castilian soup is one of their best dishes. And for dessert? A delicious cheese flan!

At the asador Las Cubas, you’ll be able to eat a juicy tostón, which is ideal for sharing due to its size. With an extensive cuisine, this town’s most popular recipe is soup, both garlic and tomato. There are not many options to eat in Arenas de San Pedro, but the restaurants and bars they have are very charming.
What to eat in Arenas de San Pedro
This important town, nestled in the Tiétar Valley, offers a tasty culinary experience. If you want to know what to eat in Arenas de San Pedro, besides its famous migas con torreznos, you will find a variety of soups, including tomato, garlic, pig, rabbit and Castilian soup, common throughout the community.

Don’t forget the famous Judías de El Barco de Avila (with I.G.P.) and the seasonal products, especially the mushrooms that are present in many Arenas dishes, often accompanied with Pimentón de la Vera (with D.O.P.). The meat and the suckling goat and pig are customary on the menus in this region, along with the chuletón de Avila (steak). Additionally, the roasted chestnuts, called calvotes, are typical here. For dessert, in addition to the various fruits, they offer arroz con leche and custard. They complete the bakery offerings with pastas de almendra, mantecados and donuts.
Tapas
To enjoy a quick meal, we recommend Tenaguillo. Here you can eat great tapas. Its specialty is their hamburgers; the flavor of the meat is excellent!

In El Sitio de Gonzalo you will find a variety of tapas and dishes, some made with beef from Avila. A simple place to share some delicious potato chips.

In the Mesón La Golondrina you should order at least one of its delicious appetizers: cochifrito, croquetas, judiones. It offers great service and quality in a beautiful setting. A magical place to go with your significant other.

Eating in Atapuerca
Atapuerca is an authentically “prehistoric” region in which, far from the “Paleolithic diet”, there is actually a very interesting and flavorful gastronomy surrounding the local alubia de Ibeas (bean of Ibeas); to the extent that many residents of the Burgos region escape their cities to come and enjoy it (including on weekdays). It’s therefore possible to eat very well in Atapuerca, the most prominent dishes being alubia stew, garlic soup and lamb chops. If you decide that you’d like to get to know world-famous Atapuerca, don’t miss our recommendations for restaurants and tapas bars in Ibeas de Juarros.
What to eat in Atapuerca
Long before discovering the famous site of Atapuerco, Ibeas de Juarros already had a reputation as a source of some of the best alubias in Spain. Without a doubt, it is absolutely necessary to eat alubia stew in Atapuerca. The alubia is an unusual legume because it doesn’t have the normal “kidney” shape, but rather that of an oval. It is typically 15 millimeters long and 8 millimeters wide. The stew is very mild and has a fine flavor; a unique characteristic is the broth that it produces, which is thick and potent and has a rich chocolate color. The alubia’s quality is typically apparent in the preservation of its skin when boiled slowly (much more than other bean varieties). The dish that you must try in Atapuerca is therefore olla podrida, a stew prepared with red alubia, morcilla (blood sausage), chorizo, oreja, etc…typical to Ibeas de Juarros.

Secondly, we suggest a meat dish selected from a wide offering that spans from classic Castilian roasts to chuletitas de lechazo and las carnes a la brasa (grilled meats) in general. Game meat is also present in the menus of some restaurants, including partridge, quail, and pichones guisados (stewed pigeon). And, of course, a Ribera del Duero wine with D.O.. To finish the meal, if you want dessert we recommend the sheep’s milk cheese.
Tapas
The tapas bars in Atapuerca are a great option. If necessary, it’s possible to eat small portions quickly in Ibeas de Juarros. In the restaurant El Palomar, with a garden-terrace, you can enjoy a variety of portions, in addition to eating from the menu. It’s worth the trouble of getting there to enjoy the restaurant’s rustic interior.

El Palomar

A la carte
Just a 3-minute drive from the site of Atapuerca, you can find the Hotel Camino de Santiago that also has a restaurant. Here you will be able to find food food at a food price.

The most prestigious place to eat in Atapuerca is the restaurant Comosapiens, established in an old haystack during the 19th century. It offers a curated menu of local products at a reasonable price, and also has a menu for Celiacs.

Just 2 km away in Olmos, you can find Mesón los Hidalgos, which offers homemade food. There we recommend los garbanzos and el entrecot.

Los Hidalgos

Como Sapiens

Eating in Villafranca Montes de Oca
The dining options in Villafranca Montes de Oca are limited. Villafranca Montes de Oca is a small town in the Burgos providence with barely 100 residents. However, it is along the Way to Santiago, so there are some bars and restaurants for travelers that want to rest a bit or for those that visit travelers. Here is what we recommend eating near Villafranca Montes de Oca.
What to eat in Villafranca Montes de Oca
The local cuisine is very similar to what you could find in the rest of the Burgos province. The main dishes you can eat in Villafranca Montes de Oca are the cabrito (roasted lamb), the cordero lechal asados (suckling lamb), the caldereta de cordero (lamb stew) and a variety of hearty soups with vegetables and garlic for the cold winters. The soups are very necessary during the many winter nights that reach temperatures below zero.

This town, bordering the Demanda mountain range, is well-known among hunters so local establishments offer dishes or tapas with game meat. Throughout the spring and summer, they mostly offer carne de corzo (deer meat), and from September to March boar and deer, along with rabbits and birds.

We recommend eating traditional dishes in Villafranca Montes de Oca, like garlic mushrooms and scrambled mushrooms. This is a town rich with mushrooms during the fall.

For tapas, you will find products typical of the province – embutidos, especially the morcilla de Burgos and chorizo (types of sausage)- fresh Burgos cheese is also typical, and often produced in the nearby town of Briviesca.
Tapas
There are few establishments to eat at in Villafranca Montes de Oca. However, in its streets open to rural tourism it’s possible to find some of the most appetizing and well-known products of the region. Though it’s a very small town, eating in Santo Domingo de Silos is a pleasant gastronomic experience. Although it’s not know for its food, the restaurants serve typical Burgos cuisine. Finding a tapas bar in Santo Domingo de Silos is a little perhaps a little more complicated.
What to eat in Santo Domingo de Silos
One of the traditional products is fresh Burgos cheese, which can be found throughout the province and benefits from well-earned fame. There is also the morcilla de Burgos, consisting of blood, onion, lard and rice.

Also very important in Santo Domingo de Silos are the asados de cordero lechal and cabrito, preferably prepared in a firewood oven, highlighting the importance of livestock in the Cid regions. A place with strong dishes, where cooking with a firewood oven is very prominent. You can’t leave Salas de los Infantes without passing through its restaurants with great dishes like the chuletón a la parrilla.
What to eat in Salas de los Infantes
Salas de los Infantes is land of jamón, though it is far from the areas that typically produce it. So if you want to know what to eat in Salas de los Infantes, try the jamón, which is at the same level of quality as fancier brands. You can also try the different kinds of pork sausages that are offered.

It’s impossible to leave Salas de los Infantes without having eaten a plate of huevos fritos with torreznos and morcilla de Burgos, as well as the alubias rojas. Since it’s a region that is completely granadera, pork is definitely not the only kind of meat you can try; many restaurants also offer asados de lechazo and cabrito.

Since the year 1984, the Jornadas Micológicas de Salas de los Infantes, a festival that celebrates the importance of mushrooms, has taken place during four days in the month of November. At the festival, you can learn to harvest, cook and, of course, taste a large variety of mushrooms (boletus, níscalos, de cardo, senderillas…). In January, the city’s inhabitants typically celebrate the Fiesta de la Matanza for one day. If you like tapas, remember that they celebrate the Concurso de Tapas y Pinchos during a long weekend in May. For dessert, pastas de manteca and rosquillas de anís are typical in Salas de los Infantes.
Tapas
To eat tapas in Salas de los Infantes, you can go to the number of bars in the area that have won titles in the tapas competitions that have been happening for years. The local Mi Bar offers a varied menu with tapas as well as larger portions in a family atmosphere. They have a terrace where you can enjoy the fresh air, but for service you will have to go up to the counter.
A la carte
Found amongst the many restaurants to eat at in Salas de los Infantes is El Pelayo, where they serve “cocido pelendón” and embutidos from the area, highly recommended by our community of travelers.

Eating in Peñaranda de Duero
Stopping to eat in Peñaranda de Duero is a great option. This town is situated within the vicinity of the Mesta gorges, which is why their sheep-related products really stand out. Additionally, if you want to try the best morcillas in the Burgos province, you have to eat in Peñaranda de Duero.
What to eat in Peñaranda de Duero
Wandering this historic and monumental town will take you about half a day, which is perfect for stopping to eat somewhere in Peñaranda de Duero.

Because the town is located near the significant Mesta gorges, sheep-related products are very important, as are the pork-derived products, among which the excellent morcilla stands out with an especially good reputation in a province where the morcilla is a grand attraction. As it turns out, the traditional flavors of “sosa, sabrosa y picantosa”, achieved using cebolla horcal and generous doses of pepper and paprika, is perfected in the “secret” combination of each flavor used in the morcillas of Peñaranda de Duero.

Another common product in restaurants and bistros is the queso de Burgos, a fresh cheese without a rind, prepared with sheep’s milk of the “churra” breed. Some producers still use sheep’s milk from the original dairy farms located primarily in the region of Briviesca, although increasingly there are those who mix the “churra” sheep’s milk with cow’s milk.

Is you want advice regarding where to eat in Peñaranda, the main dish of the region is the lechazo (roasted lamb of “churra” breed) in a firewood oven. It’s considered a classic in the region that no visitor should miss. Another good option is the chuletillas de cordero. Both dishes are typically accompanied by a mixed salad.

In this region, food should be accompanied by the great red wine of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. When in season, the other dishes you can find in some restaurants in Peñaranda de Duero are the game dishes (jabalí and sometimes corzo), as well as rabbit rabbit and partridge. The pan de hogaza or the torta de aceite are also famous.

To finish you meal, menus will always have the ‘postre del abuelo’, which consists of Burgos cheese, walnuts and honey.
Tapas
There isn’t an ample offering of tapas bars in Peñaranda de Duero, but we do recommend the Bar Cafetería La Calleja, which is ideal for eating something with friends and located very close to the Plaza Mayor.

Another place to eat at in Peñaranda de Duero is the wine cellar installed in the underground galleries of the Hospedería Jaramillo. There you can participate in wine tastings accompanied by Castilian dishes.

There is also Placete, a bar with portions at a good price. You can eat calamares, morcilla, tabla de embutidos, picadillo and much more.

Bodega de la Hospedería Jaramillo

El Palacete

A la carte
To eat from a more substantial menu in Peñaranda de Duero, we recommend El Refugio de Don Miguel, in the Centro de Turismo Rural. The restaurant is a beautiful house where, upon entering the dining room, you will be enveloped by its warm and cozy atmosphere. You will find traditional, homemade cuisine like potajes, canelones de atún, pisto con huevo…

We also recommend the restaurant Posada Ducal, which can be found in the town’s serene and tranquil medieval plaza, with views of the Palacio de los Zuñiga Avellaneda, the Colegiata and the Rollo Jurisdiccional. Their specialities are the morcilla de Cardeña, lechazo asado in the style of Salaverri, and escabechados.

Bacalao del Refugio de Don Miguel

Lechazo de la Posada Ducal

Eating in Medina de Pomar
We’ve come to an area in the region of Las Merindades, which is famous for the quality of its products. What must one always eat in Medina de Pomar? Mushrooms and meat are a sure bet. In terms of restaurants, more substantial plates are more common than tapas, although there are some bars where you can eat at the bar and try a bit of everything.
What to eat in Medina de Pomar
If you want to know what to eat in Medina de Pomar, they are known for their lechugas batavia—or lechugas de Medina—that have been cultivated there for generations. Additionally, the potatoes and vegetables are generally of great quality. This is a land of mushrooms and, if you visit during the season, you can’t miss the rich dishes made with them, such as champiñones de la medinesa, the níscalo al convento or the revuelto de perrechicos, aromatic mushrooms that are harvested between April and May. For more daring diners there are snails with mushroom sauce.

Being a true Burgos town, in Medina a predominant dish is the carne de cordero, preferably the lechal asado. You can also find excellent pork sausages as well as beef from Las Merindades. In terms of seafood, trout with bacon is typical. If you like sampling smaller portions, you will find elaborate tapas in the bars and restaurants in the region. Finally, it is recommended that you try some of the artisanal desserts of the area, like las pastas de Santa Casilda and, above all, las herraduras, a puff pastry in the unusual shape of a horseshoe.
Tapas
For eating tapas in Medina de Pobar, we recommend Café Tres Cantones. Amongst their variety of pinchos the croqueta de boletus stands out, with a very smooth flavor. Their great customer service is also notable.

Café Tres Cantones

A la carte
There are some diverse places to eat in Medina de Pomar. In the asador La Cabaña, with a firewood oven, you’ll find a great quality-price ratio. At first the location is not very exciting, but the food is very good. Our community of travelers recommends the ensalada templada and the grilled meats.

The restaurant San Francisco, named for the fact that it’s located in a space belonging to the old Convent of San Francisco—still recognizable in some architectural elements—serves homemade food at a great price. If you want to order larger portions from a menu in Medina de Pomar, this is the place for you.

In Horna (8.5 km) the meson El Cid serves a proper meal in a family setting. You can eat in a group because the portions are quite large.

El Cid

San Francisco

Eating in Oña
What can you eat in Oña? Eating in Oña is always a good choice. The variety of dishes will surprise you, whether you are thinking of getting tapas or more substantial plates. Here we’ll show you the best restaurants and bars in which you can taste a variety of mushrooms as well as order homemade morcilla. Their desserts also stand out, like the “rocas de Oña” or, if you prefer something lighter, the indigenous apples and cherries.
What to eat in Oña

The enormous splendor that Oña had earlier in history has been reduced to a small but beautiful town. Because it benefits from a microclimate, many diverse fruit species, such as apples, cherries, and above all reinetas, of very high quality are cultivated there. Black and white alubia beans, called “de ramillo”, also stand out.

A large quantity of mushrooms can be found both on the plateaus and in the forests of Oña, especially níscalos and boletus in autumn and perrechicos in the Spring.

The tradition of home pig slaughter has been lost, but you will still find great sausages in Oña. If you want to know what to eat in Oña, the homemade morcillas, specifically with rice, is a common product that is very famous, as well as the roscas de chorizo.

On Easter Sunday, children and young people buy roscas de chorizo and go to the mountain to eat them in the afternoon. The tradition has actually extended to all ages and now also includes rosquillas de morcilla, bonito, and verduras. The Thursday before Ash Wednesday, they celebrate the day of “La Chorcilla”, in which a meat feast symbolizes a farewell to indulgence and entrance into Lent. The asados, de cordero, and cabrito are all typical products in Burgos, in addition to meat stews of both small and large game as well as jalabí and corzo, meats with a particularly strong flavor. An alternative to those could be the trout, which are abundant in the Oca river. In the pastures of Barcina de los Montes, there’s a quesería that makes sheep’s milk cheese. A typical dessert is “rocas de Oña”, candies made with chocolate, almonds and dough. Now you know what to eat in Oña!

Tapas

For tapas in Oña, we recommend Bar Quintana, which has an expansive selection of skewers and great wine. At La Muralla, they serve traditional cuisine and fresh game. It’s an ideal place for celebrations, since they have a large wine cellar where they organize wine tastings. At El Cazador, they are specialized in game dishes, particularly the corzo and jabalí. Blanco y Negro is an unusual restaurant with Castilian-Senegalese fusion cuisine that is normally open during the summer season.

El Cazador

Blanco y Negro

Eating in Lerma
Lerma is a town located on the Arlanza river, with a magnificent historical past that can be perceived when simply walking down its streets. Its most famous inhabitant was the Duke of Lerma, who was favored by King Felipe III. Legend has it that he would prepare roasted lamb when the king came to visit him. Are you interested in eating like a king in Lerma?
What to eat in Lerma
After having a good walk around the town of Lerma, also called Villa Ducal de Lerma, in which you can’t skip visiting the Palacio Ducal, the ex-Colegiata de San Pedro or the Mirador de los Arcos, amongst other places. Hunger will appear after about 3 hours of walking, but that’s what we’re here for, to recommend where to eat in Lerma!

When deciding what to eat in Lerma, in the restaurants and terraces you will find in-season products from the region and typical Castilian dishes like sopa castellana and olla podrida. The main culinary attraction of the town is the lechazo asado (lamb) in a firewood oven, of the “churra” breed, an animal revered in the region and a dish offered to the king by the Duke of Lerma when he came to visit him. In any restaurant you can also enjoy tasty patitas, chuletillas or even some callos.

The Denominación de Origen de Vinos de Arlanza is in Lerma. This wine from Arlanza, the region in which the town is located, is perfect to accompany any of the typical local dishes.

In addition to lamb’s meat, pig slaughter also has a significant role in the region of Lerma because it’s possible to find great sausages (of particular quality is the morcilla). There are also excellent small game dishes, such as quail and partridge, when they are in season.

As far as dessert, the pastas de anís, known as “emes” due to their shape, are typical. They can be eaten with coffee or breakfast, and especially during the festival of San Blas, on February 3rd.
Tapas
If you’re looking for good tapas bars in Lerma, this is our selection. The Taberna del Pícar, where you can find a diverse selection of tapas that are a great alternative to the traditional lechazo offered in the majority of the bars nearby. They also have great bocatas with pan de Aranda. All at a good price.

The Bar Ducal, found near the tourist area, also offers tapas at a great price, particularly the huevos rotos con picadillo o jamón and the bacalao. It also has a good parking lot.

If what appeals to you is having a coffee and enjoying the terrace, Capri is a great option since customers say that it has the best coffee in town.

Taberna El Pícaro

Ducal

A la carte
To eat in Lerma, we first recommend the Asador Restaurante Posada de Eufrasio, which uses a firewood oven to make roasted lamb and offers a list of elaborate, in-season products. In the restaurant there is a room with a view of the Valle de Arlanza, a perfect place to enjoy snowy winter days.

We also recommend the Casa Brigante, which occupies an arcaded house decorated with historical items in the Plaza Ducal de Lerma. Their star dish is roasted lamb of the “churra” breed, but they also offer a selection of dishes based in carefully-selected raw ingredients.

Finally, there is a restaurant called Mayorazgo del Parador that offers, in a palatial setting, dishes based in the natural products of the area. We recommend the Burgos cheese or the morcilla that they serve there.

Casa Brigante

Posada de Eufrasio

Eating in Frias
Eating in Frias is synonymous with barbecues; here regional products acquire great value. Although there is little variety in bars and restaurants, this town is full of great places to eat a full meal or tapas. The simplicity of this lovely town creates the most authentic cuisine. Here we suggest the best dishes to eat in Frias and where to try them.
What to eat in Frias
Crowned by its impressive castle, dominating the Merindades region, the medieval village of Frias holds great cultural richness. If you love roasts, you will find cochinillo (suckling pig) y cordero asado (suckling lamb) roasted in firewood ovens and on restaurant menus in Frias. Game meat is also common during the hunting season, mainly deer and boar.

Fish lovers will enjoy the trout from nearby rivers. Regional products have also become popular thanks to their quality, that is the case for morcillas de Burgos (Burgos sausage), lettuce, cheese and also honey. The mycological kitchen in Frias provides an interesting variety of food; this is possible thanks to the variety of mushrooms that can be found in this town during the humid fall months. And lastly, let’s not forget the home-made pastries that can be eaten in Frias: sobaos (sponge cakes) and pastas de mantequilla (known as ‘italianas’). Additionally, the typical Burgos dessert, the postre del abuelo (consisting of cheese with honey).
Tapas
Among the bars and restaurants where you can quickly grab a bite and continue your visit, a perfect site for eating tapas in Frias is the Posada de las Merindades; a typical local place that is characterized by its offering of stews with the best ingredients in the area.

Las Merindades

A la carte
To enjoy the local products, we recommend you eat at El Rincón del Convento that offers sit down meals and tapas (located in Oña, at 24 kilometers).

El Rincón del Convento
