Eating in Zarautz (Zarauz)
If you are spending some time in Zarautz or just passing through, you must try the food. You might be surprised by the high quality of its recipes and products that its restaurants offer. There are many restaurants and bars where you can eat tapas or something from their menu. We recommend filling up on all the delicious food you’ll find.
Eating in Zarautz (Zarauz)
There is a lot to eat in Zarautz, a town that owes part of its fame to the work of famous chefs like Karlos Arguiñano, who has a restaurant and a culinary institute in the town. When you combine this with all the other great restaurants in the town, you get a place that will satisfy even the most discerning palettes.

As a coastal town in Guipuzcoana, Zarautz enjoys a traditional fishing village diet that gives special importance to their fish and shellfish from the Cantabrian. Here, you can try the txangurro al horno (baked spider crab), grilled anchovies, grilled sea bream and hake in green sauce or koxkera among other typical specialties of Zarautz, like baby squid, squid cooked with minced garlic, onion, or Julienne pepper.

When it comes to meat, steaks of bull or cow, the roast lamb, and the traditional cold cuts have a special place in the heart of this town. You also cannot leave without trying the Txakoli de Getaria (with a D.O.) that would go perfectly with whatever you are eating in Zarautz. You can also visit the nearby Parque Natural de Pagoeta, a perfect place to relax and get to know first-hand the most spectacular landscapes that surround this coastal town.

The Bar and Tapas Scene
If you are looking to eat pinchos in Zarautz, the town has some notable bars like Gau Txori, a classic for all ages; Alai, with a large selection of rich tapas and pinchos like goat cheese and tomato; and Pagoeta, which specializes in rations, bocadillos (similar to sub sandwiches), and combined dishes. The restaurant Karlos Arguiñano also offers pinchos that mix the original and the traditional.

Bar Gau Txori

Bar Alai

A La Carte
There are numerous options for places to eat in Zarautz. One of the most famous restaurants in the town is Karlos Arguiñano, a high-quality establishment where they cook traditional food with innovative methods. It also offers a seasonal tasting menu. We recommend the pil-pil cod with kokotxas.

On the outskirts of the town, you’ll find the restaurant Aiten Etxe, near the highway that runs to Getaria. We highly recommend this restaurant if you’re visiting Zarautz. It has a strong nautical theme, so much of its menu consists of fresh fish and shellfish produced by local fishermen. It also offers great views of the beach and dishes such as grilled sea brim and oysters.

Otzarreta is a traditional-looking place where you can get trendy cuisine with a local touch, and their food is made form fresh, high-quality ingredients. It has a regular menu as well as a specials menu, and you can rent out the restaurant for big celebrations like weddings or similar occasions. The grilled fish is particularly good.

Gure Txokoa is another establishment to keep in mind when visiting Zarautz. It serves local cuisine, and it uses seasonal ingredients from around the area. You can get luxurious lamb chops and scrambled egg with mushrooms here.

Restaurante Karlos Arguiñano

Restaurante Aiten Etxe

Eating in Zalduendo – Zalduondo
In the northeastern part of the Álava Plains, we find ourselves in Zalduondo, a small village in the province of Álava. Eating in Zalduondo is synonymous with local products and traditional Basque recipes—delicious!
What to eat in Zalduendo – Zalduondo
Located in Agurain, the town of Zalduondo is home to some of the best gastronomy in the region. Enjoy typical local products like game meats, fish, and produce cultivated in the local gardens. Generally speaking, Zalduondo’s cuisine represents the traditional gastronomy of the area. Some of its most popular recipes include potatoes with chorizo and snails.

In season, mushrooms from the town’s forests are ever-present when it comes to eating in Zalduondo. In winter, its kitchens prepare all kinds of soups and stews to warm you up, especially bean stews with vegetables and pork. Other classic products of Álava’s gastronomy like Idiazabal cheese and Txakoli de Álava are also easy to find here. The town’s unique Carnaval celebration can be the perfect occasion to experience eating in Zalduondo. The village also hosts several gastronomic festivals throughout the year.

Viñedos de Chacolí de Álava

Bars and Tapas
When it comes to eating in Zalduondo, it won’t be possible to get pinchos or tapas due to the town’s nearly non-existent selection of bars. Instead, we recommend some of the suggestions in the “À la carte” section of this page.
A la carte
In Araia (4 km away) there’s Umandi restaurant, which serves home-style cooking prepared in accordance with the classic guidelines of these parts of Álava. Great pork ribs and haricot beans with clams. They have an à la carte menu and a prix fixe menu of the day.

Nearby Umandi, also in the town of Araia, Araia cider house is a good option if you’re looking for an establishment that specializes in barbecue near Zalduondo.

Laua Jantokia, in Langarika, is one of the most appealing establishments in the area, especially due to its creative and innovative cuisine, made using local quality products and focusing on the tradition of the area. Amazing dishes. Rated as excellent by our community of travelers.

In Alegría-Dulantzi (19 km away) you can find Mesón Erausquyn restaurant, whose food is an appetizing fusion of more innovative options and Álava’s long-lived classic recipes. We recommend dishes like the gooey potato croquettes, octopus with spicy paprika, and the black bean stew. Some dishes come with a garnish of potato foam. Beyond these restaurants, the bulk of the options for eating in Zalduondo and the surrounding area are concentrated in the town of Agurain.

Restaurante Umandi

Sidrería Araia

Eating in Villanañe
Eating in Villanañe is a real treat due to the town’s selection of traditional Basque dishes. You won’t want to miss out on the delicious products which you can bring home with you to surprise your family and friends. Although there’s only one restaurant in Villanañe, there are other options in the nearby towns and cities that you should take into consideration.
What to eat in Villanañe
Located in the municipality of Valdegovía, the small town of Villanañe gives you the opportunity to enjoy some good Basque cuisine. When it comes to eating in Villanañe, the food is strongly connected to the recipes of inland Basque Country where embutidos (cured sausages) and cheeses are some of the signature products.

When it comes to meat, game products are very common on the tables of Villanañe and in season they are served with mushrooms gathered from the nearby forests. The potato is one of the most typical crops when it comes to eating in Villanañe, and the importance of the product can be seen in the Potato Festival, celebrated every year in the municipality of Valdegovía.

To put the finishing touch on your visit, try some Txakoli de Álava, the province’s most famous beverage, as well as locally-produced dried fruits and honey, all classic products when it comes to eating in Villanañe.

Bars and tapas
The restaurant on the Angosto campsite has an extensive menu of pinchos, raciones, and sandwiches—perfect if you’re looking for a quick meal. There’s also a bar in the Centro Social Villanañe (Villanañe Social Center) where you can have a cold drink.

Restaurante Angosto

Bar Centro Social Villanañe

À la carte
The options for eating in Villanañe are scarce in quantity but abundant in quality. The only restaurant in the town is the restaurant on the Angosto campsite, a modest establishment with good food that offers a daily prix fixe menu and special weekend menus.

At the entrance of Villanueva de Valdegovía you’ll find Asador Gorbea restaurant, a true classic when it comes to eating in Villanañe and the surrounding area. They specialize in traditional recipes from these parts of Álava, prepared using seasonal products and local produce. The restaurant also features a bar and terrace.

One of the most popular restaurants in the town of Espejo is La Kabaña, a long-standing establishment that offers pleasant, spacious facilities and fare connected to the culinary tradition of inland Basque Country. The menu of the day is excellent. We give the fried anchovies a 10 out of 10.

Moving to the town of Valpuesta in the province of Burgos, you can find Los Canónigos restaurant, another good place for eating in Villanañe and the surrounding area. This charming restaurant is housed in an original 14th-century cottage and their food represents the mountainous character of this area where the Basque and Castilian identities meet. The grilled sardine fillet is delicious. They also have tasty pinchos such as smoked sardines.

Restaurante Asador Gorbea

La Kabaña

Eating in Moreda de Álava
Olive oil plays an important role in the gastronomy of the entire Basque Country, but nowhere more than Moreda de Álava. Eating in Moreda de Álava exemplifies the saying “less is more,” seeing as it doesn’t have many original local recipes, but the products and dishes that it does have to offer are outstanding. Although there are very few places for eating in Moreda de Álava itself, the town of Oion is just three kilometers away, so you’ll have a good excuse to go try their dishes and creations as well.
What to eat in Moreda de Álava
When it comes to eating in Moreda de Álava, a town belonging to the comarca of Rioja Alavesa, you’ll find a range of traditional products and recipes. Some of the town’s most classic dishes include pork chops al sarmiento and Riojan sartenada, a dish made with snail, potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers grown in the Basque Country.

Much of the food you’ll find yourself eating in Moreda de Álava will be made using olive oil produced in the town thanks to the abundance of Arróniz olives that grow there. The town’s annual Olive Oil Festival demonstrates just how important this product is when it comes to eating in Moreda de Álava. As it is located on the border between the Basque Country and La Rioja, in Moreda de Álava’s wineries you can easily find good Rioja wines as well as Txakoli de Álava and cava (sparkling white wine). The ideal time to visit is during the Semana Santa (Holy Week) festivities which include the town’s traditional burning of Judas ceremony, a great opportunity to discover the local gastronomy and try some zurracapote (similar to sangria), a typical beverage at that time of year.

Bars and tapas
San Quintín restaurant in the town of Oion has a large selection of tapas at its bar. They make a great Spanish omelette. In Oion you can also find Cafetería Avenida 38 SL, where you can have some pinchos on their enclosed patio. They don’t offer a large selection, but the pinchos and dishes that they do have are very well-done.

Restaurante San Quintín

Restaurante Cafeteria Avenida 38 SL

À la carte
Although there aren’t many places for eating in Moreda de Álava, the town’s selection of restaurants is supplemented by other towns in the area. On the outskirts of Oion is San Quintín restaurant, an affordable establishment with good food made according to the traditional standards of southern Álava’s gastronomy. The stuffed piquillo peppers make for a good snack.

In the nearby town of Viana in Navarre, you can find Tres Tinas restaurant, a true classic for eating in Moreda de Álava and the surrounding area. Their food has a strong traditional character and they specialize in grilled meats and other local dishes. They offer an à la carte menu and a special barbecue menu. Let’s all go for some pork chops and steak!

Borgia restaurant, also found in Viana, is a modern minimalist establishment whose menu blends classic cuisine with contemporary techniques, always using fresh top-notch ingredients. The pisto (similar to ratatouille) is a fan favorite.

Returning to Álava, we recommend the restaurant of D Luis R winery in Lantziego. Their menu derives from the gastronomic tradition forged by contact between the Basque Country and La Rioja, which is quite common when it comes to eating in Moreda de Álava and nearby towns like Laguardia, Elciego, and Logroño. The restaurant is beautiful when it’s lit up at nighttime. The dishes are simple, but you’ll leave with a smile on your face.

Restaurante Tres Tinas

Restaurante Borgia

Eating in Kexaa-Quejana
In the province of Biscay, we find ourselves in Kexaa, a town that is famous for the ox festivals it used to hold. Eating in Kexaa is synonymous with quality meat, although fish also has a strong presence on the menus of the town’s restaurants. There are no pinchos bars in the town, but there are some in nearby towns.
What to eat in Kexaa-Quejana
Kexaa’s gastronomic selection is mainly based on excellent local products. Everything that there is to eat in Kexaa is closely linked to the gastronomic tradition of Álava, which has one of its focal points in grilled veal. Come hunting season, pork is used to make various embutidos (cured sausages) like chorizo and blood sausage, which are an important part of eating in Kexaa.

The forests in the surrounding area are rich in all kinds of mushrooms as well as snails, which are also very common when it comes to eating in Kexaa. Fish from the nearby northern coast is another main ingredient in many of the dishes made here. Those with a sweet tooth won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to try some local honey and marmalade, both of which are produced in line with the region’s strong eco-friendly mission. To finish up eating in Kexaa, you can have a classic Basque dessert: Idiazabal cheese with quince. To accompany your meal, there’s nothing better than a glass of Txakoli de Álava.

Bars and tapas
In Amurrio (8 km away) you’ll find Bar Crucero where you can get some good ham pinchos. They also have the capability to host weddings, communions, and all kinds of similar events. The sirloin is one of their signature dishes.

Gazurtegi, in the small town of Maroño, is a restaurant that specializes in barbecue with an emphasis on meat and fish of local origin. They also have an appetizing pinchos bar and offer the possibility of hosting all kinds of special events on the premises. They have various menus and traditional dishes with a modern twist.

In Amurrio you can find Bideko restaurant, another place to keep in mind when it comes to eating in Kexaa and the surrounding area. This restaurant is located in a traditional mansion built in the 17th century which offers an appetizing and wide-ranging menu made up of recipes that merge the Basque tradition and contemporary innovation, all made with quality local products.

Eating in Laguardia
In the south of the province of Álava, we find ourselves in Laguardia, a town nestled in the comarca of Rioja Alavesa. In this small history-filled city with a medieval quarter and rampart, the most notable point of interest is the wineries some six meters underground beneath the homes and streets. Eating in Laguardia is a great choice especially if you accompany it with some good wine.
What to eat in Laguardia
Commonly known as the “city of wine,” Laguardia is home to some of the finest gastronomy in Rioja Alavesa. Enjoy some delicious locally-grown lamb and veal as well other products of the area, including wine. Try some classic stuffed peppers or some famous potatoes with chorizo, recipes prepared in the traditional style which are very popular when it comes to eating in Laguardia. But eating in Laguardia doesn’t only mean meat and produce; fish such as cod, trout, and sea bream are also very common and can be cooked with a mixture of garlic, paprika, and vegetables.

Experience the town’s traditional festivities during the festivals of San Juan and San Pedro, where you’ll get the chance to try some of the famous zurracapote, made from wine, fruit, and cinnamon. The region’s strong winemaking tradition is evidenced by the popularity of Rioja wines. Laguardia is home to several wineries, some of which are quite renowned. In addition, it’s always a good idea to have some local txakoli or cava (sparkling white wine) with whatever you end up eating in Laguardia.

De bares y tapas
When it comes to eating in Laguardia, there are only a few places to get tapas, or as they’re called here, pintxos. Your best option is to go around to the town’s wineries sampling wines and trying the tapas that they offer.

Eating in Laudio-Llodio
Located in the Ayala Valley in northern Álava, the town of Laudio is an important center of industry and the second most populous city in the province, after the capital. The town’s cuisine characterized by seasonal products and traditional recipes is a good excuse for eating in Laudio. You’ll find yourself licking your fingers!
What to eat in Laudio-Llodio
There’s a lot to eat in Laudio, a town whose gastronomic tradition represents the purest essence of Basque cuisine. Veal, goat, and pork are popular meats in Laudio, served roasted as well as grilled and often accompanied with typical Basque vegetables such as Gernika peppers.

In season, the surrounding area is rich in all kinds of mushrooms, especially perretxikos, a small variety of mushroom which is common in the area. Later in the year when the cold sets in, the town’s kitchens make typical wintertime stews such as the classic cocido alavés (Alavese stew), which is very popular when it comes to eating in Laudio.

During the San Blas Festival, Laudio’s gastronomic culture comes to life with a series of traditional events like the txarripatas (Biscay-style pig’s feet) contest. This can be the perfect occasion to discover firsthand the meaning of eating in Laudio, accompanying whatever you eat with a glass of Txakoli de Álava.

Bars and tapas
When it comes to eating in Laudio, if pinchos are what you’re looking for, the town’s streets are home to a high concentration of pinchos bars including Lauri Barria. Here you’ll find a wide variety of pinchos in a meticulously-decorated setting. A couple pinchos that we recommend are the codfish with marmalade and the salmon with honey.

At Café Bar Azoka the pinchos are made very well. Eating in Laudio means partaking of this form of tapas. Assorted croquettes, piquillo peppers with anchovies…you won’t be able to pull yourself away from the pinchos bar. They also have cazuelitas (mini casseroles). We love this place!

Bar Cafe Lauri Barria

Café Bar Azoka

À la carte
The options for eating in Laudio are plenty, and high-quality at that. Toki On is a traditional Basque restaurant that specializes in grilled meat and roasted fish, always using fresh seasonal ingredients. They have an à la carte menu, prix fixe menu, and special deals for groups. The steak is one of their most popular dishes.

Another good place for eating in Laudio is Karrika, a restaurant with traditional décor with elements that give it a rural feel. Their classic cuisine features typical recipes from Álava’s cookbook, and they have a good selection of wines which especially showcases txakoli. Thanks to the spacious facilities, you’ll find it easy to get a table as well as to host special events. However, this is not one of the best places for eating in Laudio.

Situated on the outskirts of town, Palacio Anuncibai is a renowned restaurant with charm which serves quality cuisine characterized by a perfect union between more innovative options and the culinary tradition of Laudio. The facilities are well-equipped to accommodate weddings, communions, and all kinds of special occasions. They have good turbot.

Also on the outskirts, Balintxarreketa is one of the most acclaimed restaurants when it comes to eating in Laudio. Located in a historical mansion, their menu is made up of appetizing examples of traditional cuisine, prepared with class using fresh, quality products of local origin. They offer a daily prix fixe menu with an original selection of dishes. We strongly suggest that you order some of the octopus carpaccio!

Restaurante Toki On

Restaurante Karrika

The Santo Cristo, Calle Mayor (Main Street), and the town hall are worthwhile places to see. In addition, eating in Labastida will allow you to try Basque gastronomy with influences from La Rioja, which is even better paired with a regional wine.
What to eat in Labastida-Bastida
Belonging to Rioja Alavesa and known for its excellent wines, Labastida offers a complete gastronomic experience. When it comes to eating in Labastida, the cuisine is closely linked to the culinary tradition of Álava’s lowlands. To make your taste buds water, you can try some delicious garlic soup or some classic potatoes with chorizo. Other common dishes when it comes to eating in Labastida include lamb chops al sarmiento and roasted lamb. Lamb is also used to make patorrillo, an elaborate stew with a touch of spice. You can accompany classic recipes like these with a nice glass of Rioja wine or some of the famous Txakoli de Álava.

Eating in Elciego
We find ourselves in Elciego, located in the southern part of Rioja Alavesa. This town has been declared a national artistic heritage site and is home to several wineries that you won’t want to miss, such as Marqués del Fiscal. But you’ll have to have something to go with the wine, right? When it comes to eating in Elciego, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the Rioja-influenced Basque gastronomy, especially if you do a pinchos bar crawl.
What to eat in Elciego
There’s a lot of ground to cover when it comes to eating in Elciego, one of the most charming towns in Rioja Alavesa. One pillar of the town’s cuisine is meat. Veal and lamb are the most widely-consumed kinds of meat and are used in traditional recipes like veal chops al sarmiento, which are also very common in nearby Rioja. The influence of this neighboring province can be seen in some dishes that are typical when it comes to eating in Elciego, including Rioja-style codfish as well as other specialties from across the border.

The streets of Elciego are home to a considerable number of wineries which produce Rioja wine. Some of them, including the iconic Marqués de Riscal, are also popular tourist spots and are open to visitors. The influence of wine is evident in the wine festival celebrated annually by several towns in the area. For a finishing touch on eating in Elciego, you can try some of the town’s most popular pastries: wine-soaked peaches, cuajada (milk curd), custard, and homemade rice pudding.
Bars and tapas
Tapas are a good option for eating in Elciego thanks to the presence of several establishments where, in addition to a large selection of local wines, they also serve this type of mini cuisine. One place to keep in mind is 1583, where you can try the Basque Country’s most typical pincho, gildas, consisting of olives, peppers, and anchovies. Another option for eating in Elciego is La Ermita, a modest but quality place, notable for its wide variety of wine which you can purchase if you’d like. And, finally, there’s El Olivo.

Restaurante La Ermita

A la Carta
The options for eating in Elciego are appealing and high-quality. Marqués de Riscal winery owns a restaurant which is one of the most popular establishments in the town. However, this town in the Álava province is notable for its beautiful landscapes and natural environment. It is surrounded by two parks, Izki Park and the Entzia Mountains Natural Park, both of which are lightly-trafficked and perfect for hiking. If you choose to complement your visit with a meal in Antoñana, you won’t be disappointed. We’ll recommend some places for eating in Antoñana.
What to eat in Antoñana
Belonging to the municipality of Campezo, Antoñana is a small farming town in inland Álava which is home to simple traditional gastronomy. As far as meat goes, veal, pork, and lamb are served fried or roasted and constitute another important part of eating in Antoñana.

Artisanal honey is one of the town’s signature products, so much so that they have their own holiday to celebrate it, el Día de la Miel (Honey Day). The forests near Antoñana are rich in mushrooms, especially truffles, which are an important product in the area.

Eating in Gazeo and Alaitza
Gazeo and Alaitza are two small towns on the Álava Plains. Fairly recently, some extraordinary and enigmatic collections of Gothic paintings were found in the towns’ tiny churches. If you like art and decide to visit both towns, we assure you that eating in Gazeo, Alaitza, and the surrounding area will make your visit all the more fascinating.
What to eat in Gazeo and Alaitza
Gazeo and Alaitza are two small towns belonging to the municipality of Iruraiz-Gauna whose gastronomy is in line with the culinary tradition of the Álava Plains, the land of rolling hills in the heart of Álava. When it comes to eating in Gazeo and Alaitza, you’ll find typical dishes like potatoes with chorizo, bean stews which go well with collard greens or any kind of embutido (cured sausages like chorizo and blood sausage), as well as snails, native to the region and served with a flavorful spicy sauce. Álava-style (or Vitoria-style) fava beans are another signature dish when it comes to eating in Gazeo and Alaitza; they’re grown in the area and usually stewed with carrots and onions. You can also try perretxikos, a type of mushroom grown in the spring that is very typical of the region.

When it comes to fish, the inland location of both towns means that species that can be easily preserved are most common, such as codfish, which is typical during Lent. As in all of Álava, dishes like these can be paired with a nice glass of Txakoli de Álava, the area’s best-known beverage, or some Idiazabal cheese, another of the Basque Country’s most famous food products.

Bars and tapas
You won’t find any pinchos bars when it comes to eating in Gazeo and Alaitza, but if that’s what you’re looking for you can find many options conveniently located in the nearby town of Salvatierra. There’s a wide selection here, so we’ll highlight a few located in the center of town. First, Jai Alai is an interesting café with a variety of pinchos, especially in the morning. You’ll find even more variety at the restaurant José Mari "El Gordo", where they serve mouthwatering pinchos and also offer à la carte and daily prix fixe menus.

Restaurante José Mari 'El Gordo'

Cafetería Jai Alai

À la carte
Even though there aren’t many places for eating in Gazeo and Alaitza, the nearby towns have a sufficient selection so that altogether you’ll have access to a diverse and high-quality mosaic of gastronomy.

Laua Jantokia, in Langarika, is one of the most acclaimed restaurants when it comes to eating in Gazeo, Alaitza, and the surrounding area. Their dishes have a classic essence but are prepared and plated in accordance with the more innovative techniques of contemporary cuisine, achieving an appetizing and quality result.

Mesón de Erausquyn, in Alegría-Dulantzi, is, according to the owners, “the oldest restaurant in Álava.” Their menu is composed of creative, original dishes made with local products.

Restaurante Laua Jantokia

Restaurante Mesón de Erausquyn

Eating in Gesaltza Añana
Designated a site of Cultural Heritage and a Historic Monument, we find ourselves in Gesaltza Añana, the oldest city in Álava which is famous for its saltwater springs. Here you’ll find quality products and dishes made with meat and fish. There are hardly any bars or restaurant for eating in Gesaltza Añana, but in the nearby towns you can find some interesting options.
What to eat in Gesaltza Añana
Located in the comarca of Cuadrilla de Añana, the town of Gesaltza Añana is famous for its salt production, which constitutes one of its main points of culinary and touristic interest. When it comes to eating in Gesaltza Añana, it’s possible to find traditional handmade products such as artisanal embutidos like blood sausage and chorizo as well as all kinds of cured meats. Idiazabal cheese and Alavese pinto beans are other common products on the tables of Gesaltza Añana.

Salt is, of course, the most important product when it comes to eating in Gesaltza Añana, and you’ll find it in all kinds of seasonings for meat and fish. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to try the many other local products, such as Txakoli de Álava, the area’s most famous beverage, or honey produced in the town. The salt festival can be the perfect occasion to discover the meaning of eating in Gesaltza Añana.

Bars and tapas
At Palacio de Añana you have a small but high-quality pinchos bar.

Eating in Avellaneda
In the comarca of Enkarterri in the province of Biscay, you’ll find Avellaneda, a neighborhood known for being the site of the Avellaneda Assembly where the representatives of the towns of the comarca met until the early 19th century. In Avellaneda you’ll get the chance to try authentic Basque gastronomy. Do you want to know where to eat?
What to eat in Avellaneda
Avellaneda is a neighborhood in the town of Sopuerta and the site of the Avellaneda Assembly, which was tasked with governing the inhabitants of the comarca of Enkarterri; today it is an interesting historical site. The biggest nearby town is Balmaseda, where all kinds of traditions are preserved, including gastronomic customs.

The most traditional dish of Avellaneda and the surrounding area is called putxera, which gets its name from the vessel in which it is cooked. A putxera is a pot used to cook a stew made of beans, vegetables, meat, and embutidos (a type of cured sausage). It cooks food slowly over burning carbon in the bottom part of the pan. Embutidos are especially important in Enkarterri, reaching the peak of their relevance during the Feria Chacinera del Sopuerta (Sopuerta Pork Festival) where, among other ceremonies, the “best butcher” is chosen.

In the town’s bars and restaurants you can also find other dishes common to the region: vegetable stews, salads, stewed pinto beans and white beans, and grilled meat as well as fish from nearby ports on the Cantabrian Sea.

When it comes to beverages, the area’s signature product is Txakoli de Vizcaya, although cider is also very popular. For lunch, it’s very common for visitors to have pinchos invented by the owners of local establishments. If you get the chance to visit Avellaneda and discover all that there is to eat in the area, we recommend that you plan to visit during Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Balsameda, which is characterized by its Stations of the Cross in which the whole town participates.

Bars and tapas
You can’t find tapas bars directly in Avellaneda, so we recommend going to Balsameda, which is six kilometers away. One of the best bars there is Pintxo i Blanco; as the name suggests, you’ll love their pinchos. They also have an excellent wine selection and they’re known for their calamari. On the other side of town you’ll find El Rincón, which has a full pinchos bar as well as a foosball table.

Bar Pintxo i Blanco

Bar El Rincón

A la carte
Although there aren’t many places to eat in Avellaneda, the town’s restaurant scene is supplemented by other towns in Enkarterri.

The restaurant in the Batzarki hotel is the main place to eat in Avellaneda. It’s a family-owned restaurant that specializes in the traditional cuisine of this part of Biscay. They also offer several special prix fixe menus and a large brandy selection, most of which you can sample.

The restaurant Mendiondo, located in the San Martín de Carral neighborhood, is another place to keep in mind when it comes time to eat in Avellaneda and the surrounding area. The restaurants in Balsameda complete what Avellaneda has to offer.

Ondarroa’s restaurants and bars work with quality products, and the results are excellent.
What to eat in Ondarroa
Known as “la villa de los puentes” (town of the bridges), Ondarroa’s gastronomic offering is comparable to its beautiful landscapes. Due to its vicinity to the Cantabrian Sea, the town is home to a longstanding fishing tradition; don’t miss out on its fish and shellfish, which are the cornerstones of Ondarroa’s cuisine. Stroll around the historical quarter in search of the town’s delicious specialties, including the famous marmitako, grilled tuna, and hake a la ondarresa, a recipe characteristic of the town.

Bars and tapas
One good option for eating in Ondarroa is tapas, as the town has several establishments that specialize in this miniature cuisine. The bars Leokadi and Cantábrico are two prime examples. At Leokadi you can enjoy delicious pinchos such as tortilla de patatas with codfish, Guernica peppers, and croquettes. At Cantábrico you can also find a delicious selection of pinchos as well as embutidos.

An option that we recommend for couples is the restaurant Sutargi, which has beautiful views and serves appetizers such as tasty fried anchovies. The restaurant is small, but it’s a good place to nosh with views of the estuary. Our recommendation: try the monkfish kebabs. Their pinchos bar also has a good selection. Our community of travelers ranks it as one of the best places to eat in Ondarroa. Here you can enjoy a good steak with potatoes.

Another restaurant to keep in mind when it comes time to eat in Ondarroa is Sutargi, which offers traditional fare specializing in local recipes like the famous hake a la ondarresa as well as barbecued meats and other typical dishes.

Batzoki is another place where fine dining meets fresh, quality products, all adhering to the gastronomic tradition of the Basque Country.

Eating in Portugalete
Home to the Vizcaya Bridge in the province of Biscay, Portugalete is a seaside town located at the mouth of the Bilbao Estuary. This means that codfish and shellfish are some of the freshest and most popular dishes, dominating the tables of the town’s restaurants and bars.
What to eat in Portugalete
In the province of Biscay on the left bank of the Bilbao Estuary, we come upon this coastal town which has been modernized over the years without losing even an ounce of its medieval essence. In Portugalete you’ll find classic cuisine typical of the province in which it is located as well as a wide variety of seafood. You’ll get to enjoy some exquisite fish and shellfish, which the town’s kitchens use to prepare excellent dishes. Some of the town’s famous dishes are cuttlefish, codfish a la vizcaína, hake a la cazuela, and grilled fish (sole, turbot, sea bass, etc.), all very popular when it comes time to eat in Portugalete.

You’ll also find delicious grilled meats, stews made of pig’s snout and tripe, and stuffed peppers. An assortment of pinchos, which you can enjoy in the town’s bars, can be the perfect appetizer for a meal in Portugalete. To accompany this feast, don’t forget to try a nice Txakoli de Vizcaya (a white wine typical of the Basque Country) or a glass of cider produced in the region.

Bars and tapas
If tapas are what you’re looking for, Portugalete has several good places to get them; some of them are mentioned in the “À la carte” section of this page, but the bars you absolutely must try are Minuto and Arrieta.

Minuto’s pinchos are quite large and they offer a lot of variety. They’re delicious! If necessary, the staff can explain what each dish contains so that you can make an informed decision. You can always have not just one, but two, three…On the other hand, Arrieta is a typical tavern where the locals go for pinchos and tapas.

On Thursdays, you can add the restaurant Las Tablas to your pinchos crawl. Like other establishments in the town, they offer a pincho-drink combo for a fair price. Miramar is a great restaurant for tapas and snacks. The restaurant Adrian offers an extensive pinchos bar, but the tortilla de patatas undeniably takes the cake.

Bar Minuto

A la carte
There are numerous options for places to eat in Portugalete. One of the town’s most reputable establishments is Casa Jauregi, a restaurant specializing in barbecue where you can also find other typical Basque dishes, always prepared with fresh, quality products. The codfish al pil pil, cuttlefish, and sirloin are their most popular dishes. This is one of the best restaurants in town.

The restaurant Adrian serves quality fare based on recipes from the Basque cookbook with contemporary touches. They offer several different prix fixe menus, including a cider menu and shellfish menu. It’s also possible to hold special events there.
